   Leave a bone for Laddie

Nicknames:
Lad, Buddy

Quick Bio:
-purebred-dog rescue

Likes:
He liked to go for walks; loved to bark; and he liked my husband and my father, both of whom he never tried to bite. He also loved the soft cedar bed/pillow I bought him.

Pet-Peeves:
He didn't like most men. He also didn't like any cats except "his" cat, P.J.

Favorite Toy:
A tug-of-war rope (it smelled like vanilla) and a toy made out of the leg of an old pair of jeans, tied in a knot in the middle.

Favorite Food:
Everything (including styrofoam "peanuts" that I found him eating once).

Favorite Walk:
All of them until he got older.

Best Tricks:
When you asked him to speak, he said nothing... but if you asked him to say "woof" he did exactly that.

Arrival Story:
Laddie was my first collie, a breed I've loved since my childhood days of Albert Payson Terhune and "Lad, A Dog". When I graduated from college and bought my first house, in the DC area, I started looking in the newspaper for a collie (this was in 1987, I had no internet). I found him at a Collie Rescue League run by a woman in Virginia. I went down to her house and she had collies of all shapes and colors arrayed around her living room. I sat down on the floor and this big, skinny mahogany sable and white collie crawled right into my lap. The lady said she'd had a hard time finding him a home because he was so big-- so I said I'd take him, then and there.

Bio:
Kay, the rescue lady, called him Laddie, and so I did, too. He must have been mistreated by whoever had him first, because he was somewhat aggressive and didn't like men at all. The first thing I did was sign up for obedience classes, and because I only outweighed him by about 40 pounds, the instructor had me use a "pinch" collar on him. He sure listened to me when he was wearing it! I didn't even have to tug on the leash. He was one of those tall, narrow-chested collies, and weighed close to 90 pounds-- but he wasn't fat at all. I was working a 4-to-midnight shift at the time, so I would walk him on a leash after work. I always felt protected walking him at 1:00 am, because in the streetlights and darkness, it looked like I had a lion on a leash. Laddie always looked very regal and dignified-- look at that picture of him laying on the concrete-- but could unbend and romp with the best of them. We brought Toby into the family when Laddie was about 6 years old, and Laddie more or less tolerated him (in a kind of "go away, kid, ya bug me" sort of way). He would definitely have been the Alpha if I hadn't taken that spot myself.
