Arrival Story:
We got him from the Tri-State Collie Rescue ( He wasn't actually featured on the website yet, but we heard about him from his foster mom and went to meet him. We don't know much about his history-- he was either a stray or a removal. His foster mom said she must have picked a hundred ticks off him, including in his ears. He had scabs around his throat, so he may have been tied up. He was seriously underweight and his coat was very coarse and dry. He was infested with every parasite possible EXCEPT heartworm.

His foster mom tries out syllables on all the dogs she cares for, unless the name is already known. He responded to Maestro and Shadow so we left his name Shadow. He was approximately 1 1/2 years old when we got him in June 2003, and has since gained much-needed weight and his coat has improved. He was very unruly and untrained except for "sit", but has improved a lot. He knows "down" and "come" and "crate" and "wait" and "stay" and "that is not your toy". He's calmed down a lot, too, but still gets very hyper if he sees cats or rabbits or other dogs. He's probably not safe around small animals such as cats or rabbits, but since he's the only fellow we have other than a couple tanks of fish, that's not a problem. Based on his condition when he went into rescue, he may have been mistreated-- but you'd never know it. He's a very happy guy, and is sweet and gentle and friendly with both children and adults.
