Arrival Story: Tonka is a St. Labranard. His mother was a St. Bernard and his father was a yellow lab. Tonka was the "runt" of 12 puppies. He was too small to fight for food and was on death's bed when his adoptive dad rescued him as a "last chance effort" to save him. After a couple of weeks of constant monitoring and bottle feedings he grew up to be a big, strong boy and he's now over 100 pounds, very healthy and one of the happiest dogs you could ever meet. Tonka has been a valued member of the family for over 8 years and he has also been an extremly loving and loyal companion. We are lucky to have such a wonderful "dogson."
Bio: Tonka is a very handsome boy. He has characteristics of both of his birth parents, including his dad's love for the water and webbed feet and his mom's drool when he gets excited. Ick! He is very large, but he's definitely a "gentle giant." Tonka was born in Washington D.C., but moved to an alpaca ranch in Bend, Oregon when he was just few months old. In 2001 he moved to Salt Lake City, Utah and still lives there today. He has a great life and gets to go on lots of backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, ice climbing, fishing and camping trips with his family. He loves to swim, dig and roll in the snow, chase balls, play non-stop with his younger brother and to go for rides in the car. He has also assumed the role of "protector" for his baby brother Owen when the other "kids" try to torture him. Most of all, he just loves to be close to his people and give and get lots of luvin'.
Forums Motto: Tonka the St. Labranard
Siblings: Tonka has three brothers: Parley, a one year old yellow Labrador Retriever, Truman, an 8 year old Ragdoll kittty and Owen, a 6-month old Ragdoll kitty. He recently lost his big sister, Yentel, an 18 year old Domestic Tabby kitty who left us unexpectedly in February.
So I guess my mom and dad don't understand that I'm getting old. I've reached that age where I want to just lay on my mom or dads' feet and get a good belly scratch but noooooo.... that crazy mom of mine has decided that I'm getting fat and I need to get in better shape. Sigh... I tell you, she's been working my tail off. She's got on this crazy Yoga kick where she goes to classes almost every day. Instead of coming home and relaxing after her workout, she spends another hour almost every day making me do Yoga too. She always makes me start by sitting and meditating. Then she makes me go through what she calls a "doggy salutation" where I have to do downward dog, then plank pose, then I lay on my tummy and then I go through the whole routine again. She calls it "doggaranga" and it's very tiring. In the end she does let me lie on my back for a few minutes while she rubs my belly. She calls that one Dogvasana and I must admit that I like that part.
Last weekend she also took me on a hike around a park at event called "Strutt Your Mutt." I must admit, it was pretty fun. Even though it was really hot and I am part St. Bernard so I don't do great in the sun, it was really fun to hang out with thousands of other dog friends. My little brother, Parley, was a freak. He practically pulled my mom around the park even though she kept begging him to heel, but I was walking with my mom's friend who doesn't have a dog of her own to love, so I was very good for her and walked right by her side the whole time.
Anyway, I guess it's good for me and I do enjoy the hikes and mountain outings. I just wish my mom would lay off the dumb Yoga routine. It's so embarassing! Sigh...
