Adopt 09 Contest

El Nino was the name of the storm
it was very bad, outside the norm

My mommy was scared and about to give birth
I was about to begin my life on earth.

She found her way to the house of a vet
She's a smart one on that you can bet

Nine of us were born that night
the vet she founds us in the dawns early light.

She brought us to her animal hospital
where we got to live in a stall

Then my mommy came in one day
she met us all and we got to play.

She picked out my sister, the one she called Dot
but the next time she came I snuggled her a lot

I knew she belonged to me
and of course my sister was acting silly.

She hid in the corner, and wouldn't come out
while I played and romped and frolicked about.

Mommy said to my Daddy I'm very confused
I know we said Spot but this one's keeping me amused.

She's the smartest you see and that's what we need
not a scared pup no no indeed.

So they picked me up and said YOU'RE MINE
your life will soon be simply devine.

They named me PJ, Harpur's PJpupp
cause dad liked my paint job and mom wanted a pup

Thank you Dr. Judy and Dr. Rudy too
you saved my mommy and saved me too

You let my mommy adopt little me
and I'm the happiest any pup could be.

My Poem

PJPupps Poem

Away to me, go bye, lay down
I hear when I move my sheep around.

The sheep are laughing at this city dog
They are tying to hide in the fog.

But I take classes and learned real fast
Those stupid sheep are aghast.

My teachers strict, she knows her stuff
She barks at us, but not too gruff.

She’s taught me how to creep real slow
And keep my eye on where the sheep go.

When it’s time I get to run around
And then stop still and wait for the sound.

I listen for calls, for yells and for whistles
They might tell me to run through the thistles.

I can flank and stop, drive and pen
I’d like to do it again and again.

To be a sheepdog is honor you see
For border collies, just like me.

In England, in Scotland, America too
It’s what drives my breed, through and through.

Once in a while, I sometimes play
And let my sheep get away

Mom will laugh, or maybe shout
But that’s what learning’s all about.

We will never be ranchers that is true
We live in L.A. what can we do?

So I have some fun the days I can
And find the sheep at the base of the dam.

They’re big, they’re wooly and some are mean
No match for me, when I am keen.

Most just stand there and go with the crowd
I move them so easy and mom is proud.

But sometimes they stomp or even lay down
That’s when I see my mom with a frown.

She takes her crook and then to me
She says you show them where they ought to be!

GO BYE, GO BYE, GO BYE oh whee!
And one is loose, oh golly gee.

I gather it up and look real hard
I mean RIGHT NOW you hunk of lard!

It thinks about it… should I escape?
It is clearly wondering about it’s fate.

Looks at his herd, eating a snack,
And then at me before it goes back.

The other sheep they seem unfazed
Until they look and see my gaze.

I MEAN BUSINESS and that’s a fact
I try to look tough…but it’s an act.

Don’t tell them, oh please, I know that I won’t
I’ll use that look next time on the goats.

For now they’re believers and so they trot
They move from the field and across the lot

to their pen, where they will stay
til someone else gets to play.

I’m hot and tired, so off I seek
A way for me to beat the heat.

A tub of water, it’s sitting right there,
It’s so dirty, but I don’t care!

I jump right in I’m so refreshed
A thing my mom would never have guessed.

I’m so pampered and it’s not like me
To jump in a tub that’s so muddy .

It’s time to go our time is done
We certainly had a lot of fun.

Thank you teacher for sharing with me
Just how my breed was meant to be.

For dogs like me who have no ranch
Herding the sheep…. Not a chance.


Because of you and your wealth of knowledge
I’m kinda going to doggie college!

The time we spend, my mom and me
Is special and makes me feel free

Not all the moms like this game
They’d rather die, or so they claim.

So though I’m not the very best
And might not pass the herding test,

She lets me train and learn and play
And lets me have fun, come what may.
