For the past three years at our annual hike, TOTTSHR has honored our dear friends that have crossed over to Rainbow Bridge. This year we will be displaying personalized candles in their memory.
Each candle is approximately 6" X 3" and includes your pets name. Photo can be added for an additional $5 donation. Candles will be on display at the hike and then after the hike, the candle is yours to take with you. If you are remote hiking, a candle can be mailed to you after the hike.
For more information and how you can order yours click here.

Well.. it happened! I FINALLY got to ride in the new SUV! I really liked it!
It was quite the day too! The rescue pulled in two dogs from a kill shelter in Philly. I could smell the scent of one of them on my hu-mom. I am told she is a VERY VERY sweet girl who someone will be lucky to have.
Then mom came home and took me out to play with Vienna. Then I went to a home of a Ben and Jerry. Two dogs who were recently adopted out by TOTTSHR. Mom had to micro-chip them. They then handed over some needles for a special girl who came into rescue recently. She has diabetes and her hu-dad adopted her from rescue a few years ago. But he lived alone and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. So she came back into rescue. Her hu-dad died within a few days of her leaving him.. It was so sad. But she is safe now.. and she will find her perfect place to stay until she meets her dad again.
And after that I just went back home.. but it was a fun day out in the new SUV!

I am often asked about our raw diet. So many folks won't even try it because they think.. oh my! That is just too much work! It is so confusing, I might get it wrong, the dogs might choke.... and the list goes on. Seriously.. DON'T BE SCARED!
Basically raw feeding for dogs can be as difficult and as time consuming as you want to make it. Just like humans eating. If you want to count calories and measures grams etc.. you can and great! But it isn't necessary - when you are talking about the average healthy pet or the average healthy person. A sick animal or person obviously you may need to be careful about certain foods. From there for dogs you have your basic ratios of raw meat, bones, organs and depending on what you decides makes most sense to you.. foliage.
Despite what some folks may tell you.. whether you feed kibble or a raw diet in both cases you are putting your dogs life in your human hands. You need to do your research and make informed decisions as you go. The added benefit of raw is that you tend to have more flexibility in tweaking your food choices as you go, since you are not stuck with one bag of kibble. You will find in your research a WIDE WIDE range of philosophies. It can be down right confusing and overwhelming. Just like with training.. take it all in and keep the information that makes sense to you.
What do we do? Well.. we pretty much follow Veterinarian Tom Lonsdale's school. "Aim for 70% or more of the diet as raw meaty bones. Thereafter, the remaining percentage can be made up of offal, table scraps, and large lumps of meat or more raw meaty bones. Nature, thankfully, is tolerant and allows a range of options that provide for good health."
So to get started feeding raw here are some sites to read. I know.. it can be overwhelming.. but focus on the broad picture. And last but not least dive in:) WARNING: some humans do find that hunting and gathering for their dogs can be addictive and fun!

Happy Eating!

Crating can be soo cruel!! But the reason it can be cruel is when it is forced on a dog because there were no other options and the dog never learned that crates can be wonderful safe havens.
SO please don't ever give up on the crate training! I know a lot of folks think they are cruel.. but one thing I return to is if your dog ever in their lifetime needs to stay at the vet's or wants to travel (airline or hotels).. being okay with a crate make those times soo much easier ON THE DOG.
I am loose in the house during the day (didn't happen until about 4 years old for me).. but I still get crate refresher courses.
Want to know how being happy in a crate helped me out? Well...
- I get to travel more often. Can't stay in a hotel/motel without one. Because if the humans go out to eat, housekeeping could still come in and let me loose!
- I go to places with my humans and vol, unteer to work events and the crate is my place to go when I have had enough.
- Oh yes.. I had masses removed from my liver. Imagine how much WORSE my stay at the vet would have been if I REALLY hated my crate? In a dreaded vet office AND forced into a crate. Talk about CRUEL!!!!!
-Recovery from liver surgery includes extreme risk of internal bleeding. Guess where I had to stay for my recovery. Yup a crate! Without a crate I would have been able to jump on the couch, and pull my stitches and could bleed to death.
- Recently we had an owner who contacted us because they have to move overseas and want the dog to come with them but they never crate trained the dog! Now the poor dog is going to have a VERY stressful ride in a crate in an airplane now for a move OR find a new owner!
So you humans may hate crates.. but guess what? Sometimes they are necessary and today is a better day to learn to accept them rather than the day when you REALLY need one.
BTW... did you also know that one of the leading causes of bloat is stress? And bloat is a real killer. I survived bloat, but my bloat was brought on by stress. I gulped air.. until my stomach bloated.
So please please please.. I beg you humans to take some time to teach your pups that crates are good. Even if you don't need one today, there is a good chance your dog will have to go in one in the future!
