Arrival Story:
Bennie was a sickly, skinny, half-bald dog when I first saw her. She was wondering around my neighborhood. I thought that she might belong to my neighbors, but I knew that they had a history of mistreating their animals, so I didn't want to return her to them. I called the local animal control, who came and picked her up. I called them the next day. They said that they knew she belonged to my neighbor but didn't want to return her. They said that if the neighbors didn't claim her in 3 days, I could come get her and she would legally be mine. I waited the 3 days, then went and got her. I took her to the vet right away since she looked so bad. I was afraid she had mange. Instead, she was found to be positive for heartworms and suffering from malnutrition. She had skeletal deformities in the bones of her hips, knees and ribs from lack of nutrition, as well. She was nursed back to good health before being treated for the heartworms. Even so, she nearly died from the treatment when a large clump of worms left her heart and became lodged in her lungs. Luckily, she survived, though! She has an occasional limp and leg back left leg is turned out from the bone deformities, but she is happy and healthy otherwise.

Bennie's life began the day I found her (or she found me). We don't think about the time before then.
