Arrival Story:
This is actually my sister's dog. She was found by the side of a dirt road in Northern British Columbia in early summer, 2002. She was starving and it took an hour to lure her into the van with Tim Horton's doughnuts, then she almost got the boot from camp because others thought her mass vomiting and hysteria were signs of rabies. Apparently she'd been spotted in the ditch for a week beforehand, always in the same spot, wailing and screaming but terrified. She was named 'Rat Dog' because they thought she was going to be re-homed if she made it through the summer, and that if they gave her an unattractive name it would help them stay unattached. It didn't work because Ratty turned out to be da bomb so Rat now lives the doggie high life with her Mum, who takes her treeplanting and for lots of walks and runs at the beach. Ratty is *very* alpha and will not be bossed around by anyone, human or dog. Actually, she listens to her mum because her ma is very gentle and never yells or asks her to act in any way undignified-(Ratdog's pet peeve). Rat's very protective of her family and likes to enforce laws. She's calm with those she knows, hanging on the couch- but takes awhile to love strangers. Ratdog is ggggreat, and I want her to have lots of friends so she can stop being sooo skittish- she also lurves to play.

We think Ratty might be full/partial American (Canadian?) Indian Dog with a whole lotta Red Heeler mixed in, perhaps also coyote. The only human settlement within 300 miles of where she was found was a reservation and there was a rumour some puppies had gone missing from the reserve. Rat is very athletic and strong, and she has keen hunting instincts. She definitely learned her street smarts when she was a pup. Rat is off treeplanting with her Mum this summer but hopefully will be back soon. In the winter, the legendary Heeler energy goes underground and she lives on the sofa (except at biscuit time).

Yo, I'm Rat. I'm living in Nanaimo, BC at the moment with my grand ma and pa, because my mum's at school and there ain't no good walks in the city. But I love the grand parents like a second skin. I've got 'em trained to jump at the swish of a tail. Everyday they say "no more biscuits!" and every night they're tossing them out of their pockets like there ain't no tomorrow. I love it here, but I long for the summers when I get to go live leash free for several months on end and show my dashing style at log walking- also the girls fawn all over me because I do cute expressions with my massive ears, and I love girls! yeah! Anyway, I better go, I like to stay (vaguely) mysterious. Lata! Ratdog xxoo
