Arrival Story:
I am a male (neutered) Rat Terrier living in San Antonio, Texas. I was born May 2002. I am about 15 inches long and 12.5 lbs. I am my owner's first dog. I came to live with her in June 2006. I used to belong to her younger brother who had me since I was a puppy. But, when he moved out of his parents house he left me behind. I was out of control. I was anxious about everything, ran out the front door any chance I got, barked and whined a lot! They had to use those baby gates to keep me out of everything. My current owner, who never really paid attention to me before, volunteered to foster me at her home for a while to give her parents a break from caring for me. They're retired and needed their rest. She made it perfectly clear that it was only temporary. She said she didn't have the time or patience a dog requires to keep me permanently. She house trained me in two days and I get to go for walks every day. I love going for walks and do great on a leash. I was taken to the vet and got caught up on my vaccinations. I even learned some tricks. She taught me how to sit, lay down, roll over (only on carpet and grass of course), jump up and stand on a big core exercise ball, shake hands and get on the tread mill. Her "human" best friend taught me to "dance"-hop in circles while on my hind legs. I think she did pretty good job! Turns out I wasn't a bad dog. My previous owner was just lazy. :-) Guess I started to win her over because by Halloween she had a costume for me to wear to a costume party at her friend's house. (I was Krypto the Super Dog. You know, Krypto, Superman's dog.) She said dressing me up as a human Halloween character would be wierd, but going as another dog was ok. It makes sense to her anyway. And I got a stocking and toys for Christmas! I was always licking my paws and my eyes and nose were always runny. So she found a vet and took me for a visit. Turns out I have allergies. So now I take medication twice a day and feel tons better. Well after she invested all this time and money on me, she let my previous owner know that she couldn't in good conscience let me go back to him. He would undo all the training I had been through. She's pretty bossy, I mean persuasive, and besides he had a baby arriving in December 2006. So he said he was fine with me staying with her and her husband permanently. She's a total dog person now! Guess I came into her life at the right time. She never forgets that I'm a dog. No calling me her "baby" or herself my "mommy". That's fine for some, but not her. No T-shirts or sweaters either. Thank goodness. This is Texas after all. I would melt away. I am an indoor dog 85% of the time. I go out for the usual "business", walks & to play. Any chance she gets to take me somewhere she does. I do great in the Jeep. I even have a car seat that I can get in by myself.
