Arrival Story:
I had been patienly looking for a canine companion for a little over a month when I met Xander (a.k.a. Spuds). He was a three month old puppy when he stole my heart.
I had actually gone back to the local humane society to see another dog I had met named Wriggles. Wriggles kennel was the last on the left, "Spuds' " second to the last on the right. He wasn't in his kennel when I visited Wriggles the day before, but he was there when I went back for a second visit.
I took one look at the calm, black and white, square nosed puppy with the partially flopping ear, with his head cocked to one side and fell in love. It took me a few more days to check into his breed (they guessed at Bull Terrier mix, therefore the name Spuds) and make sure I was ready for the responsibilities of dog guardianship.
I'd call each day to be sure he was still available for adoption. They'd say yes, but he was a popular boy and likely to be adopted soon. I brought my sister's pooch, Molly, to visit him and see how they got along since they would be spending time together at the dog park. They romped and played, and when his puppy-ness got to be too much, Molly put him in his place.
I called the next day - he was still up for adoption. The decision was made - he was meant to be with me. That was June 29, 1999.
