Quick Bio:
-pound dog-dog rescue

Likes:
me (his mom), laying in the sun - no matter how hot, rolling in wet snow (in Maine), rolling in dead or smelly things (anywhere), chasing lizards, spiders and esPECially crabs at the beach (in FL), belly rubbins, digging holes under things to lay in.

Pet-Peeves:
Thunder, fireworks ( he would not venture outside after dark for a week after July 4th and NYE), most other dogs, being picked up, getting stickers in his feet (sandspurs, prickers), and he hated to be touched by feet

Favorite Toy:
The Augman never did do toys

Favorite Food:
whatever you're having. He trembled in anticipation of a piece of cheese. He loved pigs ears and rawhides when he was young and still had teeth.

Favorite Walk:
He loved any and all walks.

Best Tricks:
The only trick Augs ever did was to sit up and wave his paws for a treat. He would come-a-running when he heard "Heeeere kitty kitty kitty kitty!"...does that count as 'perfect recall'?

Arrival Story:
He was the only small dog at the shelter that day...I was living with my mom at the time, and she had 3 pre-requisites: no barking, no shedding and nothing big. (Well...2 outta 3 ain't bad!...fur was constantly falling from Augie like needles from Charlie Brown's Christmas tree!) I will never forget the little white shag-a-muffin staring up at me with his big brown eyes. All it said on the card was, "Husband won't let wife keep" and that his name was Scotty. He didn't answer to it, so we changed it to Augie, which fit him much better. I had him for 8 and 1/2 years after that...and he became the most portable, adaptable dog on the planet; I took him everywhere! In 2003 he moved to Maine with me, and it was there that I found out he had Congestive Heart Failure. Augie passed to the Bridge on August 16, 2004, and will be forever missed.

Bio:
As best I could figure out, Augie was a westie/corgi cross, though he looked more like half polar bear, half squirrel. He had a faint reddish tinge to the fur on his ears and a strip down his back that really showed up when I would get him shaved in the summer. It became apparent that poor Augs had been abused in his previous life...he hated to be touched with feet, and all it took was a raised voice to send him cowering. His canine teeth were both broken, and he had to have a couple molars pulled due to infection. It was evident he hadn't been socialized with other dogs...he snapped at most; especially large rambunctious ones, though he did get a little better as the years went by. His favorites were small, calm dogs like himself...one nose sniff, one butt sniff, and on to ignoring each other...the end. In all the years I had him, there was only one dog he was over the moon for...an elderly retired greyhound named Bandit. We would see him at the beach...the poor guy could barely walk from arthritis, and Augie would become a wiggling fool for him! It was the craziest thing...and Bandit would pretty much ignore him, just as Augie would other dogs. Hopefully they are hanging out together at the Bridge. I was told by the shelter that he was around 2 years old, then the vet said, "Um...er...probably closer to 3 or 4." In reality, he was probably about 5 or 6 when I got him..and it didn't matter to me! He always made a wheezy sound when he breathed, it got very loud when he was excited or hot. He loved most people, but was very nervous and snappish around young children. He never bit anyone, though...he only gave warning snaps, for which he was immediately sorry, and would apologize profusely. Augie's best times were when we lived in a state park (I was a park ranger) between the ocean and the intracoastal waterway for three years. He found his inner outdoorsman there, and had many encounters with wildlife. Augie loved to try to catch him an armadillo! His ashes were spread there in all of his favorite spots, and at the beach where he loved chasing crabs, wading in the surf and rolling in the wet sand.

Cute Augie Fact #1:
He made many different grunty noises, especially when he was happy. He also would 'air-snap' repeatedly when he was excited and happy.

Cute Augie Fact #2:
He sneezed alot...and sounded very human. One time my nephew exclaimed, " He said the letter 'V'!"

Cool Augie Fact #1:
Augie had a stare-down with a rattlesnake one time...scary! Also an indigo snake, a black racer, and a corn snake.

My Tail of Devotion for Augie - I miss you, Little Man

Oh Augs, where do I start? You taught me so much...about patience, understanding, and unconditional love. It broke my heart not to be able to ease your fears completely during your time with me...and for that I'm sorry. I'm so sorry about the way you were mistreated in the life you led before I took you to your real forever home.
I will never forget how happy you were chasing the tiny ghost crabs at the beach, or wading in the river; rolling in the slushy snow and chasing the chipmunks in Maine. I can see you running with your funny rocking-horse gait now. I'm glad I was able to recognize and share in your love of the outdoors, my scrappy little friend.
I miss you everyday...and even crazy Cooper reminds me of you often. He looks for lizards to chase in the same places you did, and sometimes he makes little noises that sound just like you. I miss you so much, Little Man...I look forward to the day we meet again.
