Arrival Story: I waited about 7 years after my last Newfoundland passed away to get another. In the interim I had this wall calendar of Newfoundlands, and was struck by the brown ones. I left that calendar on April the entire year, and after the year was over, cut out the photo and put it on the wall.
One day I was suddenly ready and called the Newfoundland Club of Northern California. My first call, I was told a gal in Placerville had just had a litter with a brown female. Is that fate or what? At the time, my husband didn't want any dog, so I snuck and got Ishmael. He was surly for about a week, and now talks baby talk to her and spends hours per day walking and scratching her.
I know Ishmael is a boy's name. But about 4 years before I found Ishmael, I woke up with this phrase in my head: "Call me Ishmael." I knew it was her, telling me what to name her. Later I was like, "Isn't that some line from a book?" It's the first sentence of "Moby Dick." Only thing was, I've never read "Moby Dick." But my husband was reading it at the time.
My first Newfoundland was Monstro, after the whale in Pinocchio. So, they are both whale names.

Bio: "My mom writes historical novels and she's put me into two of them so far. She said I can't be in the one about Ethiopia because it's in the mountains and there were no Newfoundlands. But she put me into her Madagascar pirate book because it's about ships. I'm the heroine of the book--I save a good guy from drowning. I also get to ruff up some Chinese pirates."
