Arrival Story: Paks wandered up to my house after being beaten, fixed still with stitches, and dumped. She was scared of everything and I did not think I had room for her. It took three of us to manhandle her into my SUV. I drove her to the pound, where I was told she was the ugliest dog they had ever seen (they thought the gangly 5 month old was full grown) and would never be adopted. I made it almost home, before I turned around, went back, and paid $70 to get the dog I had dropped off less than a half-hour earlier. Figuring my husband was going to kill me, I set about naming her. No name that came to mind got her attention until late that night. Having given up and gotten Hubby to see the light, I asked him to pass me "Paks" ("The Deed of Paksenarrion"), the book I was reading. Paks sat right in front of me. She had her name. Pakesnarrion after the lead character, Honor after our roommates favorite charater in a Weber book, and McWyrde, the name we had given our makeshift family. She did $3000 worth of damage to our home that first week, would go catatonic if approached with a brush, and was scared of her own shadow. Who knew Paks was going to become my hero and my best friend!

Bio: BTW, Paks went on to overcome her fears and trust people again. She lived up to her names, both heros in books. She found missing kids lost in the woods, dementia patients wandered off from their nursing homes, and once the guy who held up a store. She saw me losing my mobility. Then, she gave up the job she loved (SAR work) to do the one I needed her to do (service dog work)! Then last May (2006), a speeding driver swerved into my yard and took her from me. He hit her.
