Journey is ending

Chester's cancer is spreading and he has become increasingly more uncomfortable. He is still eating but his pain is definitely showing. We had another snow storm last night so he got one more day to snow plow. We hate the snow but he loves it, so we are glad he got one more day of it. This has been a heartbreaking and painful decision but we have decided to set him free of his earthly journey this Saturday. We are expected to have a big warm up and we want to let him enjoy one more day in the sun with beautiful temps arriving on Friday. Please say a little prayer that his passing is peaceful and more importantly that we don't back down and allow him to continue suffering. He has been a treasured member of our family and he deserves to leave this world with dignity.

No change

We increased Chester's medication over the weekend to see if it would help to reduce the swelling in his lymph nodes but unfortunately there was no change. Monday we increased it again to 6 pills (3 in the morning and 3 in the evening) in hopes of keeping it under control. As of now there is still no change but that also means it hasn't increased in size so that is a bit of good news. His boy is coming home for Easter weekend and that will definitely brighten his day. Right now we are monitoring the size of the lymph nodes as well as monitoring his quality of life. One day at a time is his new motto, that and when is my next meal. At least his appetite is still great. :)

Thanks for the constant prayers for Chester, Yuki, and Mia. Yuki goes to the vet on Thursday for a wellness check. Due to his age, he is really having mobility issues but I am hoping that is all. I don't think I can handle any more majorly terrible news at this time. Mia is actually doing pretty good at the moment. She was even happy to spend 10 minutes outside today.

Vet appointment

While hoping for a better outcome, I guess the confirmation was what I had expected. Chester's epitheliotropic lymphoma has spread to the lymph nodes. The vet wants to further increase his prednisone dosage and we can hopefully slow down any further progression. While she wasn't optimistic, she did say you just never know.

She will call Monday to check and see if the extra medication is helping to reduce the swelling of the lymph nodes and if not she wants to increase it even more. She also says we need to keep an eye on his quality of life because it is possible the cancer has spread a lot further than what we can see. So we increase the meds and pray it helps for awhile longer.

BTW - He is still a happy dog and as of now has a great quality of life.

Cancer may be spreading

Having trouble sleeping since noticing the lymph nodes in Chester's neck are enlarged. We've been told to watch for it and they have now definitely shown signs of getting bigger. Will call the vet tomorrow and see if they can get him in to aspirate and find out if it has indeed spread. I'm really worried as I don't know what to expect and what the real consequences are now that it has possibly happened. He has been acting fairly normal just a little hungrier and thirstier than usual.

Praying it is an infection and not metastasizing.

Copper Thieves :(

My hopes of swimming have been crushed. The house the pawrents looked at had been vandalized by copper thieves. They ruined all the electrical and plumbing as well as drywall. For whatever small amount they got for the copper it is nowhere near the tens of thousands of dollars that they did in damage. The pawrents don't want to take the risk with that property.

The search continues.

Springing in the snow

We had a big snowfall earlier this week and I've been having lots of fun springing, rolling, and plowing the snow. I have also been doing very well on my medications. I have some leg pain but overall doing great for now.

The pawrents are looking at a house tonight and I hope they like it because it has two acres to run in and best of all it has an in-ground pool!! I LOVE water and would love to go swimming with my boy. Speaking of my boy, he is on spring break next week so he is coming home after classes tomorrow. I can't wait for him to come home, I love when he is back. I really want the school year to be over so he can come home for 3 full months. I'm hoping I continue to do well so I can spend lots of time with him and if we move.....I know we'll be spending lots of time at the pool.

Pawlease be a nice house. I have visions of swimming already in my head. BOL!

Gots me an ear infection

I had to go to the vet today for a few things but mostly for my ear. Turns out even though I am on antibiotics, my ear infection came back. So now I have another medication that goes directly in the ear every day. My motto is anything that turns into a treat is OK by me.

I am also on a new pain medication for my legs since they have been bothering me a lot lately. They have been very sore and I have been chewing and licking at them lately. Mom and the vet are not sure if it is anxiety or arthritis but hope the Tramadol will ease the symptoms.

Lastly, the cancer does not appear to be spreading but it is certainly causing havoc to my body. My system is so busy fighting the cancer it isn't doing much else. I lost another pound even with an increase of food and mom says my skull is nothing more than skin over bone. The vet says the body is compensating for fighting the cancer by taking all the muscle away. I still look handsome just skinny and a bit splotchy. My skin healed but my hair isn't really growing back. Also, my bad breath isn't going anywhere. There is no reason for it except that the body can't deal with everything that is going on and the bacteria isn't being fought off. So, unfortunately it is a problem that won't resolve. Mom is going to buy some more dental chews though and hope it helps a little.

Overall, the vet was pleased that I looked pretty good and still have a great appetite. She also gave me lots of treats. It's all the eyes guys, you have to master the LOOK!

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm hanging in there

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone!

I'm starting out the new year pretty well. I do have to go back on antibiotics though because my skin lesions are coming back. I was hoping I wouldn't have to but it looks like I will have to stay on them along with the prednisone. I feel good though and have been having fun playing in the snow. I love to plow snow and make snow angels.

I hope everyone has a wonderful 2013. I am planning on giving this cancer a run for its money. I have quite the fight and hope I can beat it down for quite awhile. That's my plan for the new year!

DDP and pupdate on skin

How pawsome! DDP again! Thank you Dogster HQ

Since starting the antibiotics and the medicated baths for the skin condition that flared up when I started the prednisone, we have noticed a tremendous improvement. My skin is no longer bright red and itchy and no new spots have popped up. Also, the ones I had are all healing and the scabbing is already gone. I will soon be out of antibiotics though so the vet said if they start to crop back up as soon as the medication is gone, we will have to go back for more and I will have to stay on them. Mom is hoping that isn't the case but I don't care. Pills equal treats for me and I LOVE TREATS! Woo Woo Woo! BOL!

As far as the cancer goes, I still feel great. My boy will be home in a few days too and I can't wait to see him. He will get to see me as the same happy woo woo boy that he loves so much. We will have a great Christmas together.

PS- thank you for all the wonderful condogulation and get well pressies. And thank you secret Santa :)

If anypup is interested. Here is the recipe for the biscuits we made yesterday. We did add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon for extra flavor to the recipe. We also flip the biscuits over half way through and recommend keeping a close eye on them to prevent burning. Enjoy :)

3 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups oats
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease two cookie sheets. Next, just mix all your ingredients, stirring until they’re well-mixed and ready for kneading. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface. Depending on the oil in your peanut butter, you might have to add a teaspoon of olive oil if you find the mixture is a little too crumbly (I did).

Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness then cut the dough in desired shapes and place on your cookie sheets.

Pop the cookie sheets in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes until lightly browned.

Let the doggie biscuits cool completely before serving them to your dog or refrigerating them.
