 Quick Bio:
Best Tricks: She could sit, lay down, shake, and speak. Because I'm disabled, she knew "wait" and "slowly", when we walked together.

Arrival Story: I had no intention of getting a dog, let alone a large dog, but as I drove past the local Humane Society one day in 1993, I happened to see a beautiful black and white dog sitting off to itself. I thought, "hmm... pretty dog" and drove on. A day or two later I again found myself driving by, and looked to see if the dog was still there. She was and something made me stop, get out and look closer at her. She simply looked at me, sitting sort of regally aloof. All the other dogs were going crazy to get my attention, but this one was just quiet and watching. Something just drew me to her. So, on an impulse, I asked to take her out on "approval" for a week, and that was that. She was my wonderful companion for a decade.
In 2001, she had a stroke, but recovered well from it within a week. Then, in mid-November, 2003, she had a 2nd stroke, and, though she tried for 3 weeks, just couldn't recover. She seemed to become more and more confused, and just never got back up again. On December 4th, 2003 I held her in my arms as the vet released her from pain and suffering. In my whole life, I'd never had a dog that was all mine until this one, and she was my best friend. She loved me with a vengence, as I did her. I'll always love and miss my Sophie.

Bio: When Sophie came home, she weighed 32 pounds. The HS told me she had been terribly abused, starved and hurt, but they had seen a lovely personality in her when she wasn't afraid. She feared everything it seemed though ... passing through doorways, loud noises, brooms, and men. When I brought her home, I wanted her to feel safe and to come in the house on her own. I had to prop the door open because it took her 45 minutes to get the courage to come through that door, and then she came crawling in on her belly, as if someone was going to hurt her. It broke my heart!
It took Sophie about two years to get confident again (though never as confident as she should have been), about three years to get up to her rightful weight of 65 pounds, but only about one day for me to love her and vice versa. She was quiet, patient, unassuming, and pleasant ... always by my side, even when I was recovering from back surgery and had to stay with relatives. She stayed by my bed the whole time.
When Sophie was finally up to her weight and confidence, she was the most beautiful dog ever. There will NEVER be another Sophie.
