NONE! Kubie loved life and everything about it!

All toys, including the many toys he and Genghis inherited from Attila!

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere with Genghis or Rommel...he especially loved The Arboretum

Best Tricks:
Kubie could sound like an entire tribe of berber women when he screeched at squirrels! The whole neighborhood heard him! It was like being in "Lawrence of Arabia!"

Arrival Story:
Kublai came from the same Michigan breeder as Genghis. He and Genghis were not directly related, but they were brothers and close from the very start. Genghis doted on Kubie and Kub adored, worshipped Genghis.

Kubie was only 4 months old when he was viciously attacked at the dog park that we belonged to. Genghis, Kub and I were at the park, as we often were in those days. Kubie loved it and would run and play. That day, he was playing with other dogs. Nothing rough, just puppy play. A wolf-hybrid dog and its 2 packmates suddenly attacked Kub. It was the most horrible attack, Kubie was screaming. He was so little, he was not able to defend himself. When we were finally able to remove the big dogs, I found my baby Kubie on the ground, his rectum had been pushed out of his body and he was in agony. I rushed him to the vet. They ran some initial tests and referred him to an emergency room where he eventually wound up having major surgery on his intestines and bowels which had been crushed by the attackers. He was supposed to make a full recovery, but over the next 6 months he kept throwing up, every few days at first, then almost daily. He also didn't seem to be developing normally. His nails, his hair, it was like he wasn't getting enough nutrients. I took him back to the vet almost every week during those months, sure there was something wrong. They checked him out over and over again. They checked his digestive system, and did repeated berium checks. Nothing showed up. When he was about 10 months old, I took him in again. It was getting worse. That's when they finally saw it. The opening to his intestine, right under the stomach, was closing up. It had been closing up slowly over the last 6 months which was why he wasn't keeping food down, was throwing up, and was not getting all his nutrition. It was such a slow process though, that it didn't show up until it was almost completely closed up and the berium coudn't get through. They operated on him and the initial prognosis was positive, but unfortunately this had gone on so long that his intestines and bowels could not handle the shock. He died the night of his surgery. Barely 10 months old. I took Genghis to see him both alive and after he passed away. I didn't want Genghis to wonder what happened to him, to never know. They say animals are smart and that they know when there is death. I'll never know if I did the right thing, but I wanted Genghis to smell Kub. I hoped it would help him mourn him. Genghis was very depressed any way. It was such a shock to lose Kubie, so young, and after the horrible attack that caused his eventual death. The hardest thing was knowing that he had been suffering all along, those 6 months. And yet - and this is a lesson to us all - he was the happiest and most loving little dog you will ever meet. He loved life, he loved people, he was pure joy. He made such an impression on so many people, so many loved him, so many mourned him. In his very short life, he brought so much to so many. He is in our hearts forever.

I'm Still Here

Mom, friends, please don't mourn for me
I'm still here, though you don't see.
I'm right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I'm always near.
I'm everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I'll never depart
as long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I'll never wander out of your sight-
I'm the brightest star on a summer night.
I'll never be beyond your reach-
I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach.

I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,
The first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there's no one to love you,
you can talk to me through the Lord above you.
I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I'm the smile you see on a baby's face.
Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!

My Tail of Devotion for Kublai (2001-2002)

Kubie! Little Kubie was the sweetest little bear! He loved life and everything about it. And we loved him. Genghis was crazy about his little brother. They did everything together. They were like book ends.

Kubie also worshipped Rommel. The 3 of them were great together, a perfect pack of Peis. They all knew their place in the pack...Mel was in charge (firmly in charge!), Genghis was the Beta, and lil' Kub was the baby.

He was a happy go-lucky little fuzzball! From the minute he joined us to the minute he passed on, he was all love and exuded pure joy at the simple fact of being alive. It was amazing...when we finally found out what was wrong with him and that he had been afflicted since his attack, slowly getting worse...it was amazing to know that through all that, he never stopped being happy. Kubie was an example for the rest of us.

I will never forget his BIG eyes. They were like pools of love. He had the longest eyelashes and would look at you through them with such love in his eyes. Kub had a special way of showing his pleasure when I could come home from work....he was too short to reach up to me to kiss me, so he would jump on the bed and then jump up...put his paws on my shoulders. He was so excited, so happy that he would wind up chewing my chin while he kissed me "hello!" It was adorable.

We had so many good times throughout his very short life. We have so many wonderful memories. He was only with us for 8 months, but he touched everyone he met in that time. He was such a happy puppy, people loved to see him.

Genghis was so sad when Kubie passed on. Thankfully he had Mel and consoled himself in Mel's company, but it took months for him to recover. He still remembers Kubie's name.

There is no way to do justice to Kubie and his amazing personality. I believe he was meant to be with us. I will always be grateful that he was part of our family. I will always grieve his loss. His passing was so unnecessary. I did everything I could to save him, in vain. I knew something was wrong, I knew it in my gut...it was heartbreaking to find out that what killed him was not only due to the attack but slowly progressed over a period of 6 months. When I think of the pain he must have been in...it breaks my heart. It makes his happy attitude and love of life even more poignant. We have never gone back to the park where the attack took place.

We love you Kub, we miss you. You are in our hearts forever. We will see you again.

Hi mom, hi mom....mom, mom, mom, mom, mom! {{{{{{BIG HUGS}}}}}}

I'm OK! I'm at the Rainbow Bridge. Attila was waiting for me when I got there. I love him! He introduced me to Sammie and Dex, and Mel is here with us now too. There are tons of squirrels, mom! I have a great time chasing them! [BIG SMILE!]

We're in a very happy place, the only thing missing is you and Genghis though. I check in on GG when I can. I know he has a good friend, a brother in Sul...that makes me very happy [SMILE].

I wanted to stay with you, mom. I tried to hang in there. I know you did everything you could to save me. I know you and Genghis were so sad after I passed on. I'm OK though. There is no pain here. I'm a big boy now, big and strong. I filled out, you would be so proud! I have lots of friends here and I run with the pack. There are no mean dogs here, I am safe and happy. [SMILE]

Some day, we will all be together again. I can't wait to see you. [LICK, LICK, chew, chew, LICK!] I love you and GG so much.

Give my love to Big Giant Auntie.
XOXOXO & {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}
