Star actually belongs to my boyfriend but if you ask her she thinks she's mine. She loves us both wholeheartedly but seems to suffer temporary deafness whenever my boyfriend speaks to her but suddenly regains hearing when I call.

Bio:
Star is getting up there in years (she'll be 14 this March) and she has many of the typical aging problems that we all face but that hasn't dampened her spirits any. She is a true Lab. She will go to great lengths to get in any body of water she sees and, in her younger days, would fetch any and everything as long as someone would throw it. She is also a roving trash can, often offering her services in the kitchen whenever a stray item of food finds it's way to the floor. I work at a vet clinic and she loves to go to work with me. She likes seeing all the other dogs and getting attention from all the people there.

The saddest news

This is so hard to do. Our beloved Star's health has rapidly been declining over the past few months and we fear that the pain is too much to continue to put her through. She started out a couple of years ago with arthritis, which is oh so common in older pets & people, so we put her on medication to help with the pain and supplements to help her body stay as healthy as it could. For a while that was her only problem and she did well. Last year we became concerned that she had a tumor in her lungs because she started to breathing in short, quick breaths. Upon x-ray there was no tumor but a very large calcium buildup over several of her vertebre that was making it painful to take deep breaths because it was right over her lungs. So we changed her pain medication to something better and she was pretty ok. About 6 months ago she started to do strange things, just slight things that at first weren't cause for concern but we started to notice more and more "little" things so it was time for another vet visit. We ran blood tests and she had several check ups and it was determined that Star was showing signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. She was put on medication for that and it seemed to help a great deal...for awhile. Over the past month Star has started on a rather rapid decrease of mental awareness and ability. She is also in pain from her arthritis (she can't get up on her own anymore) and has lost almost all of her muscle in her hind quarters so that when she does stand she shakes from the strain of holding herself up. She paces around in circles or just stand in one spot but continues to "hop" from foot to foot with her front paws. Last week we noticed that she spent a lot of time at the water bowl. She finished off an entire bowl of water in about 30 minutes and after all the water was gone continued to go through the motions of drinking unaware that the water was gone. She gets confused & disoriented when she wakes from sleeping, which she does at least 18 hours out of the day. And now she has lost her ability to control her bodily functions and has started peeing & pooping in the house, even if she just had gone out 15 minutes before. The doctor gave us the sad news that considering her condition and the behavior that her brain was quickly deteriorating and sadly nothing can be done to help her at this point. Rather than watch our baby suffer on we have decided to do the most humane thing and send her on to Heaven. We are spending our last night with her tonight and tomorrow our precious Star will be looking down upon us from the Rainbow Bridge. I hope that you all cherish your precious puppies & kittens while you can because their time with us is all too short. Sweet Star has been a blessing in our lives for 13 years and has been the best friend anyone could ask for. We love you so much Star!!!

My first day

Hi everyone,
As you read, my name is Star. My mommy already covered the basics when she was nice enough to register me here. I hope to make lots of friends here! Like Mommy said, I'm an old girl but that doesn't stop me from playing with my favorite squeaky ball or my new yellow doggie. I did have a ducky that I loved but Daddy said I chewed on it so much that the squeaker doesn't work anymore. That's why Santa Paws brought me my yellow doggie for Christmas. I spend most of my time relaxing and snoozing since I have a hard time getting up and around some days. Mommy & Daddy say it's because I have something called arthritis. I'm on medicine to help with the pain and it works pretty well, most days. Enough of that sad stuff, lets talk about something fun. I love to get treats! Any kind is good with me. Little cookies, big bones, chew bones, cat treats (when I can steal them), carrots, ice cubes, bread, tomatoes...practically anything! The only thing I can remember that I don't like are the strange green things called okra. Mommy loves them but me and Daddy sure don't! My mommy works at a vet clinic and sometimes I get to go to work with her. It's so much fun! I love seeing all the dogs that come in and their owners are very nice too. They like to pet me and I like to let them. Many of them tell my mommy what a good girl I am. If I could wish for anything I would like to have a swimming pool. I love to swim! Whenever we take a trip to visit my mommy's family I get to swim in a pool AND in a big lake! I have a blast. One time we went camping with some of mommy's friends and I got to swim in a river. That was fun too, but the rocks were very slippery and I fell down a couple of times. My best doggie friend is Corkie. She belongs to my mommy's friend that goes camping with us. Corkie doesn't like the water though. She just likes to watch me playing in it. We have fun camping. We get to eat hot dogs and chase squirrels. I live with 3 cats. They are funny little creatures but they are my friends. Well, Koko doesn't like me to get too close to him so I leave him alone. Circuit and Austin like to play with me. I think Circuit wishes she were a doggie too. I helped her learn what to do when Mommy says "Sit" to us. I am also training her on how to check the kitchen floor for crumbs after Daddy & Mommy finish cooking. She's a fast learner!
Well I guess that's enough for one day. I sure am excited to be here on Dogster!

Wags & kisses,
Star
