Arrival Story:
Brownie's fur-sister Annabel was not quite a year old and had wrapped us and nearly everyone she met around her little paw. Our good friend Uncle Bob happened to mention that his grand-daughter's Godmother had a tweenie long-haired dachshund that they weren't entirely happy with. Well after a few weeks, a few phone calls, and some divine intervention, Brownie was delivered to us on February 13th, 2005. It was our original intention to foster him until a suitable home could be found. Brownie had other plans and set them in motion from the moment he arrived. He immediately took to the dog pack - a varied crew of pals that get together at least once a day for a play session. There was never a snarl, growl, or tense moment. He also got along with Annabel instantaneously as well. Needless to say, we didn't work very hard at finding him a new home - he had already FOUND one for himself! I was afraid to tell my husband that Brownie was staying and he was afraid to tell me, but after about two weeks we both sheepishly admitted it to one another and the matter was settled! I knew Brownie wasn't going anywhere the day that hubby put Annabel's NY Yankees Collar on him! So we ended up with two dogs in less than a year and wouldn't change it for the world. Now I can't picture myself ever living without at least one dachshund!

Two years ago today I came to The Bronx!

Two years ago today Brownie came into our lives. We’d heard of him for a few months through our dear friend Uncle Bob. The little long-haired dachshund who was living with people who at best didn’t appreciate him and at worst verbally abused and neglected him. Bob was determined to bring Brownie out of these circumstances in part because he loves dogs and cats and in part because Annabel had so charmed him in the 9 months he had known her. One Saturday afternoon, we recieved a call from Uncle Bob … “were we really serious about taking Brownie in as a foster dog?” Sure we were - as ready as we might ever be. Good was his answer because he was being brought to us THE NEXT DAY!

To say the least, the exchange was surreal. Bob’s daughter and her family rode down with their friends who owned Brownie. They arrived, took him out of the car and Brownie immediately scampered off to meet Annabel and Bob’s dog Lily. From their first sniff they got along like peas and carrots. His crate, a container of food, and some vitamins were handed over and a few pleasantries were exchanged. Brownie’s little girl mistress said goodbye to him and she and everyone left. Before they were out the driveway, they remembered a tiny McDonald’s happy meal toy that they said was “his favorite” and handed over a red leash.

Looking back, the McDonald’s toy was one that was currently being handed out with Happy Meals - had it been acquired that day? The leash was absolutely NEW and since he didn’t seem to know how to walk on a leash had they hastily purchased it so they could control him during the hand-off? He was freshly shorn, freshly bathed, and reeked of medicated shampoo. But, HE WAS SAFE!

It didn’t take long for Carlos and I to fall head-over-heels in love with Brownie and his essential brownie-ness. We did try to find him a new home, but not very diligently. He settled in, charmed us, and little by little there were signs that we had found him a new home - OURS. The warm purple sweater I had ordered for Annabel and was supposed to have exchanged for being too small FIT HIM PERFECTLY. The navy blue New York Yankees collar that never looked quite right on Annabel was clasped around his fuzzy neck and finally looked PERFECT on Brownie!

So here we are - two years later - still hopelessly smitten with Brownie and thankful that his former owners were kind enough to realize that they were not the best family for him. I don’t suppose my blogs, photographs, and stories about him could ever convey the depth of our love for him, but I hope they come close.

SNOW!

Here in NY we've been waiting patiently for snow. It's already January 19th and until this morning there has been NO SNOW! We didn't get very much but I did get to have one heck-of-a-romp!

As you can see in some of my dogster photos, I LOVE SNOW!!!!!!!!

That's about it for now, I have to go burrow under the covers of the big bed and defrost. Won't that be a nice surprise for Daddy when he gets home from work?

"Hey Laura, why does my side of the bed smell like wet dog?" Paws crossed that Mom doesn't change the sheet!

Ciao for now .... Brownie
