Likes:
Scritchies on her butt, belly-rubbin', tugowar, and training with treats!

Pet-Peeves:
When I take too many pictures with the flash. Seeing a dog and not being allowed to play (she's still learning about when and where it's time to play.) Gentle Leader. Birds that swoop too low and scare her, or tap my head.

Favorite Toy:
Her tiger blanket. She pounces and attacks and tugowars with it, and then sleeps with it in her crate and in her bed at night.

Favorite Food:
Donuts! Tortilla Chips! Beer! Now, things she's allowed to have: Natural Balance Lamb Formula - for treats! Also, Eukanuba Lamb & Rice. But really, if it's edible and on the floor, it makes no difference to Alex.

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere there's good sniffin' and especially if we're running together. She always has fun at Balboa Park.

Best Tricks:
Stays until release even when she REALLY wants to get up; will sit and roll over with hand signals. If I make my crate symbol, she'll go there. And if I put her food down in front of her nose, she won't eat it until I tell her to, even if I walk away.

Arrival Story:
I found Alex through Petfinder.com - I wanted an American Bulldog but am opposed to buying a dog when so many animals don't have homes. I saw Alex's picture and fell in love - and never stopped to read her bio. It turns out that she is COMPLETELY DEAF (and I have tested this many times.) But she was so loving, and licked my face and sat in my lap and wagged her tail so hard that her whole butt wiggled, that I had to adopt her and bring her home. Housebreaking and training have been a challenge, but she learned really fast and I love her as much as any other dog I could have adopted. There are even perks - she doesn't bark at the UPS truck, or the sound of the back gate opening!

Bio:
I could go on forEVER about her! Alex spent more or less the first 1.5 years of her life in a kennel. The rescue where I found her took excellent care of her, and she was in fine shape, just a little overweight, when I brought her home. But from the little information I have, I understand that her breeder intended to put her to sleep immediately upon discovering her deafness. Someone who knows or worked with the breeder scooped Alex up and gave her to the rescue. She was placed in one other home early on, and the family had another, older dog, and didn't want to commit to training a deaf puppy (especially an american bulldog they are willful, and it really is very difficult to learn how, when you're used to training a hearing dog vocally.) She went back to the kennel for the better part of the next year, until I found her! Now we all love her very much, and hope that she loves her home too. She's been with us for almost a year now. She is very sweet with people, especially children, and she has given me and my household and friends nothing but love. ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- --------She's come such a long way, I can hardly believe it. I had very low expectations for her ability to learn (and my ability to learn to teach her.) The rescue told me that she was dog aggressive, and so for many months I didn't take her to dog park or let her sniff other dogs on walks. I found at a later time that she does play very well with other dogs, at dog park and out in the big wide world. She does have some territoriality issues with some other dogs on our home property, and we are working on those together. ---------------------------------- ---------------------------------- -- She has turned out to be quite obedient, willing to learn new hand signals for many things (she just showed me the other day that all my signalling for "Go potty!" has been working - she went on command! And she mastered "Go crate" very quickly. She used to bark when I left her home alone, but now she just watches me go and then goes back to her crate for a nap or finds a toy for a good chew.
