Miss E. - Crossed the Bridge on July 15, 2012

Thank you to everyone for their gifts and thoughts - it has been very difficult for my Mom and two sisters I left behind. One of my foster sisters', MaryEllen crossed over the bridge on July 9, 2012 and my very own "DAD" was disgnosed with cancer and died a year ago - it's been really difficult - I hope you all understand.

Me - I'm running free once again along with Mr. Ash and I have my Dad to pick me up and hold me once again. He, Mr. Ash and I are back together again and we are content. Mr. Ash lays at Dad's feet waiting for Mom, and all the other abused pups who found love but not health surround him and "ME" I'm right on my Dad's lap.

From the Fields of the Rainbow Bridge,

Miss E.

Last August Was Just Too Much For Me!

Last August Mom wrote, for me, that Save Our Setters in TN needed help because their founder, Alissa, was diagnosed with cancer; she asked everyone and anyone to help out, and a lot of people did! Good news is that Alissa is doing so much better now but she, the Board and volunteers of Save Our Setters could use more volunteers to help out in so many ways, but at least SOS is regaining its feet.

Mom fostered one young, red headed, kennel breeder, wild child named "Reese", and boy did that young, little girl shake up our complacent gang.

Oh, don't get me wrong - Mom had all three of us sit down and she explained to us, that it was going to be difficult because Reese probably was never out of a breeding kennel and had to compete for everything, but we had to try out best to help her.

Well, that first month was hell. As I seemed to be the only pup that Reese didn't attack but she played toooo rough for me and the vet finally put me on a tranquilizer and I was kept apart from Reese, so I could calm my nerves.

Reese and Hannah really got into it and Mom called in a K-9 Protection Handler and he finally got Reese to understand she was to respect Hannah and there was peace between them, but then she started on Kalie and while Kalie and Reese didn't draw blood, Kalie developed some long lasting defensive behaviors she didn't have before.

Well, in the end - Reese came around enough to be placed up for adoption and she was very, very CAREFULLY placed in a great home, with a brother her same age. I'm happy to report she is doing very well and her new Mom and Dad just love her.

I'm doing better, Hannah has settled back but is just a little too "on alert", and Mom is working with the K-9 trainer on bringing Kalie around.

Rescue and fostering is like the saying "...two birds in a bush.." You just never know what you will find. Thankfully, Reese really was a sweat, smart red head - who had a lot of human negelect and abuse fostered on her, but that didn't kill her kind and loving personality!

We all went through tough issues, but in the end it was worth it to see how we all helped Reese regain her "Setter" being.

There is nothing like a setter's (any setters') heart.

Well, that's about it ....... Take care and open you hearts and home to any animal who needs your care, patience and love!

Getting on in years, Miss E.

Save Our Setters - TN - Needs Help with transport & fostering - Cancer

My Mom got an email this morning about Save Our Setters setterhome@att.net and their homebase foster Mom needs help with numerous pups. Some of you may already know or have this information and are helping out already. But, my Mom received an email this morning from Alissa of Save Our Setters requesting help with a transport from TN (going through TX) to San Diego, CA for four Irish Setters and she just mentioned that I probably heard that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has to find transport and foster homes for all the pups in her care. Well, I hadn’t and at 4:30 in the morning that was one Hell of an opening email to read. I called her and she told me that surgery for a double mastectomy was scheduled for mid-August. I’m not into medical jargon, but I understood the confusion, fear and deep need to take care of herself; but foremost, to ensure that the pups under her direct care are well placed – temporarily. The SOS corporate structure is still in place and is in a financial position to help with foster vet care and oversight.

I can give you a long sob story about my battle with Ovarian cancer, the many sick (physically and emotionally) pups I had to help cross the bridge over the past 40 years, the loss of my husband to cancer last year; but, I can also tell you how Alissa helped give me a purpose when I was undergoing cancer treatment. In fact, A&B and the many transports I did, also, served a similar purpose during my husband’s cancer treatment. There is something about helping others that helps you focus and I only have to look at my photo album of the many well loved pups who passed through our home and who found their forever homes to assure me.

These four pups need to get to San Diego, CA to foster homes and I have also volunteered to foster one of the older pups and help transport the four IS’s through TX. Please reach out to Alissa and ask your contacts to help out with these pups and any other pups. Cancer doesn’t understand race, income, religion, politics, hurt feelings, envy, pride, exhaustion, lack of money or physical room. This is a time for everyone in the rescue community to come together to support another rescuer, who loves and cares for the animals. Everyone of us in rescue has personally experienced the cancer fear or know people who are still fighting or knows someone who has died.

Please contact Alissa at setterrescuemom@yahoo.com or at setterhome@att.net and help her to help herself, her family, and the pups! Pleae HELP the pups!

Governor Perry of TX, Just Maybe the Next President

A 5-year-old rescue mutt named Woodrow from Austin was running as a write-in candidate for governor of Texas against the now current re-elected governor Perry.

If you voted for the current human Governor Perry, you may just want to vote against Governor Perry on any platform. I prefer having Woodrow in office than the current Governor Perry.

Go, Woodrow!!!

The Next Governor of Texas Could Be a Dog

Courtesy of Lorri MichelIn the annals of Texas political candidates, surely all of them have been human. Until now.

A 5-year-old rescue mutt from Austin is running as a write-in candidate for governor of Texas.

His name is Woodrow, as in Wilson.

His owner, Lorri Michel, tells PEOPLEPets.com that Woodrow is a political independent, so he couldn't run in the Democratic or Republican primaries that happened in March. But, the Nov. 2 general election is open to all, and Michel wants Woodrow's name to be written-in on ballots.

It all started when 43-year-old Michel, an Austin attorney, watched her pooch frolicking off-leash one day in nearby Pease Park last summer. She watched in amusement as Woodrow would stride purposefully from one park visitor to another.

“He would go up to every dog, child and adult, and it was as if he was saying, 'Hi, how are you? Don’t you look so nice today?'” Michel says. “And then he would just move on.”

A friend, who was also watching, remarked at the time, “Oh, my God, Woodrow is mayor.”

And so a campaign was born. It was partly Michel's way of expressing frustration over Texas politics, but knowing that Woodrow's votes would be statistically insignificant, Michel is using the Woodrow bandwagon to publicize the many thousands of sick or unwanted dogs that are being euthanized in Texas.

The Woodrow groundswell caught the eye of the Austin American-Statesman, the local newspaper, and the publicity is also helping to raise money for Austin Pets Alive, which takes animals to be euthanized and places them up for adoption. Woodrow has raised — through the sale of T-shirts alone — $2,000 so far.

All the campaigning is a surprise given that Woodrow started out as a timid little puppy. When Michel adopted him in 2006, he was found curled up in a fearful ball, even though he wasn't sick. She had to carry him to her car.

When she took him for walks, Woodrow would dash for bushes and hide. Time and the company of Ms. Michel’s other pets — the dogs, Remy and Francis, as well as the cats, Orangy, Purlie Stars, and Cornelius — have helped, Michel says.

Woodrow, about 70 lbs. and the size of a suitcase, may be an unconventional candidate, but in some ways, he is qualified to be one. According to Article 4, section 4 of the Texas Constitution, a candidate must have been a state resident for at least five years. Check. And he must be at least 35. Double check. (In dog years, anyway.)

Still, voters expect their governor to be able to write as well as speak, if not belong to the same species as that of his constituents.

Whatever the case, Texans can see Woodrow at his first campaign stop Saturday, May 1, at the Canine Hilton in Austin. As his slogan goes, How ruff could it be?

The Passing of Ash.

With a very heavy heart and all pups' heads are bowed, in honor of Ash, as he passed from this life, as we know it, to cross the Rainbow Bridge this day.

Even though Ash was much older then his stated adoptive age, Ash was very gentle, loved life and had great empathy and patience and many a child and pup benefited from his big heart.

Ash will be very much missed by his Mom and the TXMisfits, who loved him.

May the wind always be at your back and the sun always shine on your face, as you travel over the Bridge and are welcomed by the many who went before you. Be free!

Love,
Mom and the gang!

March Just Blew In!

Wow! The winds have been blowing in W. TX these past few days. Mom says, "That when March blows in like a Lion and goes out like a lamb," summer is just around the corner.

But, I'm not sure I won't be blown away before the the lamb part arrives. I do my business in record time because I'm afraid that I may end up in the land of Oz, like Dorothy did.

Nothing bothers Kalie, she'll stay outside all day if Mom let her. Ash takes his walk, as usual and Hannah eventually gets enough of the wind that she knocks to come back in.

When you see tumbleweeds blowing your way or a sand storm coming - it's time to run for home! Welcome to a W.TX Spring!

You all take care,
Miss Elie and the TXMisfit gang!
