Gone to the bridge

We will love you always and miss you Macy. You changed your family's world.

A Dog Has Died by Pablo Neruda

My dog has died.
I buried him in the garden
next to a rusted old machine.

Some day I'll join him right there,
but now he's gone with his shaggy coat,
his bad manners and his cold nose,
and I, the materialist, who never believed
in any promised heaven in the sky
for any human being,
I believe in a heaven I'll never enter.
Yes, I believe in a heaven for all dogdom
where my dog waits for my arrival
waving his fan-like tail in friendship.

Ai, I'll not speak of sadness here on earth,
of having lost a companion
who was never servile.
His friendship for me, like that of a porcupine
withholding its authority,
was the friendship of a star, aloof,
with no more intimacy than was called for,
with no exaggerations:
he never climbed all over my clothes
filling me full of his hair or his mange,
he never rubbed up against my knee
like other dogs obsessed with sex.

No, my dog used to gaze at me,
paying me the attention I need,
the attention required
to make a vain person like me understand
that, being a dog, he was wasting time,
but, with those eyes so much purer than mine,
he'd keep on gazing at me
with a look that reserved for me alone
all his sweet and shaggy life,
always near me, never troubling me,
and asking nothing.

Ai, how many times have I envied his tail
as we walked together on the shores of the sea
in the lonely winter of Isla Negra
where the wintering birds filled the sky
and my hairy dog was jumping about
full of the voltage of the sea's movement:
my wandering dog, sniffing away
with his golden tail held high,
face to face with the ocean's spray.

Joyful, joyful, joyful,
as only dogs know how to be happy
with only the autonomy
of their shameless spirit.

There are no good-byes for my dog who has died,
and we don't now and never did lie to each other.

So now he's gone and I buried him,
and that's all there is to it.

Translated, from the Spanish, by Alfred Yankauer

Just an update

I'm still kicking around. Hard to believe I'm such a senior lady now. Mom says time is flying by. I can't believe I'm 11 years old :) Still in pretty good shape for a mature pup, BOL. I still love to go for quick bunny chases in my back yard and the more relaxed stroll around the neighborhood.

Since getting older and retiring from flyball, we haven't been traveling to doggie events. That makes me a little sad but not too much. I still have a comfy couch to lay upon and I love to take naps in the sun on warm days. Life is good.

Well, that's about it for now. Hope everyone has a pawsome day.

Winter is flying by

I can't believe February is almost over. Today it feels more like spring-almost 70 degrees here in the mid-atlantic. Makes me wanna go outside and just roll around in the grass. We have that here now. All the snow from our January 26 storm is just about gone.

Not much going on right now. I'm enjoying being at the top of the pack and entering my senior years. Mom says she'll get me into some Rally classes soon. That should be nice. Hunny has two legs towards her 1st title and Mom just needs to get some time to finish that up. It'll be fun to get back out and about again.

End of the year and new beginnings!

It's been awhile since the last posting but that's the kinda year it's been :)

Mom and the rest of the gang had a great summer and an even better fall. The rescue where Hunny came from, Northern Virginia Sheltie Rescue, called us in late August about another young Sheltie in need, Pepper.

Long story short, Mom invited him over for a long weekend stay with us in September, then a longer week-long stay in October while Pepper's foster mom went on vacation. After all that visiting and having fun with us, Mom decided he could stay.

Now we're a happy pack of 4! Can't believe our family's gotten so big but it's fun having a younger dog in the house again.

We're looking forward to the holidays and hopefully some more snow! Who knows what the new year will bring but we're grateful now for a good year with our friends and family.

It's been a looong time

Wow, didn't realize how long it's been since Mom made an update to my page. With work, kids, that crazy snowmageddon back in February (and dog activities mixed in) time flies!

I'm still hanging out, enjoying my retirement. My health is great...just had another b-day back in December and I'm 9 years old now. Except for the problems when I tried to play flyball, you'd never know I had any problems with my joints and neck. Mom's good about keeping my weight down, provides a supportive diet, and gives me several comfortable places to hang out and sleep. Oh yeah, and the exercise, too.

On our neighborhood front, we have a new grooming place that opened down the street from us. It's called "Woof"! A very nice lady named Jessica and her family/friends opened this gem not too long ago. We love Jessica and she gives the best baths around! She's awesome with a pair of scissors and knows how to make a muttly black dog feel like lady! (She's not too shabby with the terrier and sheltie, either, BOL) She even does CATS! I love them but for some reason Jessica always has me sequestered from them (darn it!)

Well, that's about it for now. Until next time, enjoy all of this nice weather we're finally having in the Mid-Atlantic area!

August Update

Well, Hunny enjoyed the last update so Mom thought it only fair my page get's this month's news :)

Things are going well and it's been a great summer. I'm still not able to play flyball, unfortunately. I've been going to my chiropracter which helps a lot but I still double stride the jumps, so Mom can tell I'm not back up to 100%.

I'm still hanging out back at home for the most part. But that's okay cuz I still have a lot of fun going to the dog park and doggie beach to swim. I still enjoy guarding my back yard against pesky squirrels and such.

My family's human kids are heading back to school next week so I know the house will be a whole lot quieter for my important daily naps, BOL.

Everyone take care and be careful out there the next few weeks. I know all those human kids will be running around in your neighborhoods again soon (gasp! unleashed, even!!) They'll be lining up to ride in those loooong yellow thingys called school buses and generally causing all the traffic to back up again, BOL. Slow down and keep an eye out. I know I love my human kids very much and can't wait for them to come home to me safely every day so they can play with me!

Oh my dog! It's been raining here for a week. Not that I'm complaining, BOL. I love the wet and mud. Mom's not so keen on it, though. Something about drying off 3 sets of paws a couple of times a day really seems to be getting her down for some reason. Come on, Mom! Do you really care if we leave a muddy trail all through the house????

Hopefully the rain will end soon and the back yard will dry out. I enjoy playing ball and such back there but Mom says it's too wet and slippery out to play like that right now.

Oh well, hope all of our pup pals are enjoying their spring!

Well, it's been a long winter but we finally got some measurable snow here at my house. I love it!! Mom took off work to come out and hang with me and Hunny and Kenny! What a blast.

I know I'm ready for spring and everything but it sure is great to finally get a little bit of the white stuff to play in for a little while.

Well, we're keeping this entry brief so we can go back out and play some more. Bark atcha later!

We're a featured diary today! How cool!!

Wow, our New Year just keeps getting better all the time! The wondeful Dogster folks picked me to be one of the doggies whose diaries are featured today! You can find the other dogs' diarys on Diary Central using this link:

You'll want to look under 'Today's Picks'!

I could just run around in circles chasing my tail, I'm that happy :)

More fun stuff this coming weekend for me. Mom and the disc dog gang are going to attend a special showing of the new movie, Hotel for Dogs. Our local SPCA is hooking up its supporters with an early-Saturday-morning preview. That should be a lot of fun! Mom'll bring some donations for the shelter, of course and over 18 MADDog disc club members will be sporting their gear, showing their support of the SPCA. Isn't that pawesome??

We'll be headed back to flyball practice Saturday evening. I hear we have a really big beginners class lined up this session. It's always a lot of fun to introduce flyball to newbies. Who knows? Maybe a few will eventually become team members. We can always hope!! Even if they never join a team or race in a tournament, they'll come away from the experience having had a great time with their dogs. That's the most important thing, after all :)

That's about it for now. Thanks again to Dogster for this pawesome featured diary honor! :)

I've been tagged for the first time!

Thanks to my buddy Binx (810778), Hunny and I are being tagged for the very first time. How exciting :)

This is a game to help us all get to know each other.
The rules are simple, just state 7 facts about yourself and post them in your diary so we can all learn more about you. Then tag 7 pals, who have not yet been tagged, to continue the fun. Copy and send this note to let them know they've been tagged and to come and read our diary. Post the names of the pups you tagged in your diary so everyone will know. That’s it.
So come and read my seven facts, okay?

Here are my 7 facts:

1: When I was left as a puppy with the humane society my card on my kennel said I was a "destructive chewer". Talk about being labled at an early age! BOL!! Mom's glad, since she was able to bring me home with her but it was the other family's loss for never having heard of peanut butter-stuffed Kongs, BOL.

2: I am an alpha doggie to the max. Even though I'm a girl dog, I will lift my leg to mark a tree or fence or whatever, just like a boy dog. That surprises some humans, let me tell you! BOL!

3: I love to be petted all day long! Just let me lean into you so you can rub on my shoulders, belly, butt, whatever :)

4: I am a kick-butt swimmer!

5: I've never been scared of any noises.

6: I love to EAT!! Like a lot of Labs, I don't know when to stop if I get the chance to eat. Mom's had to take me to the vets twice to have my stomach emptied. (I blew up like a big balloon! Thank goodness I was okay after both times)

7: I've been to Michigan--without Mom!! Friends of ours took me with them to a flyball tournament while my family went on vacation without me--the nerve of mom, BOL. I wasn't playing flyball yet when this happened but I had fun traveling with all those Aussies :)
