Birthday: September 1st 2002 Likes: Affection. Something we dont think he had before he was rescued. Pet-Peeves: Loud noises, sudden moves, mailman Favorite Toy: Rubber spikey bone Favorite Food: apple piece, cheese. Really any treat. The first time we gave him one, he didn't even know what it was or how to chew it. Favorite Walk: outisde by our home Best Tricks: Jumping on his hind legs when we sing to him. When we first rescued him, his legs were so weak that he couldnt even hold his balance to his hind legs. Arrival Story: I used to volunteer at North Shore Animal league. One day I came in and saw this little scared rescued doxie in a cage in the back of the shelter. Having a heart for doxies, my heart went out for this lil dog. I found out that he was brought to NSAL from another shelter on Long Island. After a few more visits from my husband and bringing our 3 doxies to meet Pokey (formerly called Spunky) we knew he would be a pefect fit for the family. Kibbles, Bits and Scooter get along with him very well and has quickly accepted him. We call him and Scooter the "Stinky Brother Gang". Bio: First Pokey was abandoned by his family and brought to a shelter. He was then transferred to North Shore Animal League. Another family adopted him and brought him back. I ca;t believe someone would give this little guy up! Pokey has come a long way since we rescued him. Pokey was so timid and submissive when we first got him. As soon as you would get near him or even look at him he would flip on his back and show his belly. Lil Po had trouble looking at you in the eye and was so scared all of the time. He quickly learned his new name, but when you would call him or approach him he would walk with his belly draggin on the floor because we think he was used to betting punished or hit. When Po would hear a loud noise, he would do the same. Lil Po has hair missing around his neck with scars possibly from having a collar that was too small for him. He also has a scar on his back and we dont know how he got it. Pokey's tail is bent and it looks like it was broken or something. It looks like a bent periscope. We dont think he was allowed to walk around alot or play because when he first came to our home, his legs were so floppy, like spaghetti. His legs would slip out from under him and he couldnt even stand on his hind legs without falling over. When we gave him a toy, he didnt even know how to chew it!! Pokey had terrible gum disease and scarring, but our vet has taken care of that.
We have taken alot of time and love with our Pokey and he is doing very well now. We made up a song for him that we sing about getting stronger every day. When we sing it to him he stands on his hind legs and bounces. He can run pretty well now, but not very coordinated. Each one of his paws goes in a different direction. We call him Lil Buackaroo b/c it looks like he is bucking. Po loves to grasp his bone and chew on it. He has always gotten along with his sisters and brother and they have become best friends. Po still acts very submissive and scared when he hears a loud noise, but is more comfortable with his surroundings. Po has learned the weewee pads in a jiffy. He is so smart. Po sleeps in our bed with his head on my pillow on his back, he is quite a human! Po's hair has grown back thick, shiny and beautiful. Forums Motto: Pokey is getting stronger everyday!
