Arrival Story: At the end of August in 2001, my husband and I came home early from work to have a family day with our daughter, Emilie. We all drove up the driveway and saw this beautiful golden dog with long ears in our back yard. When it saw us, it dropped into the grass. My husband rushed out of the car and ran to it. Two minutes later, my husband came back with the dog in his arms. He announced, 'This is my dog," then took it into the house. The dog was a gorgeous male yellow lab with these big, brown seal-like eyes. He couldn't walk, his feet were torn up, and we could see just about every bone sticking out of him. We knew that he'd been out on his own for a long time, and even further, because he couldn't walk, we knew something was seriously wrong. Emilie swaddled him in a blanket, sat with him, and talked with him - what a sweetheart he was! Two days later, we brought him into a vet. They poked and prodded him but he gave no indication of what was wrong. After putting him on an x-ray table, they found that his pelvis was shattered. By this time, we'd all become attached to him. He'd even picked out his own name, Jake. We decided on a surgery that would take the pressure off of his pelvis and give him the best chance to walk again. Jake was in surgery for four hours (our vet said he could count how many times he'd been in surgery that long on one hand). They approximated a week for him to stand but the next morning, Jake was on all fours, eating, and going out to potty. After a week of observation, they let us take him home and he's been with us ever since. We never found his previous owners. The town had a clue of where Jake came from but they wouldn't tell us much: He -may- have been out on his own for a month, he -may- have left a blue collar behind and he -may- not have been registered. There was some secrecy in that office that day and we heard them muttering, 'He's better off ... ' Jake has brought both happiness and stability into our lives. We were a tight family before but since Jake came to us, we've been complete.
