Want a Berner? You should do yourself and your puppy a favor and do your homework before adopting a Berner. Never buy a Berner out of the paper, puppy store or from a puppy mill. You should take the time to find a reputable breeder who breeds not to make money, but breeds healthy quality dogs. Ask questions, talk to several breeders, visit their kennels, join your local BMD club and the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America. Don't want to join? Go to their website and study up before you make a purchase. www.bmdca.org. These dogs have shorter than normal life span then your smaller breeds and some possible serious health problems; cancer, hip & elbow dysplasia, histiocytosis, Lymphoma, Von Willebrand's Disease, Bloat, and on. If you aren't willing to spend money on good health care and nutrition, then this isn't a breed for you. Yes they shed, twice a year....all year long. These guys make great additions to your family, family being the key word. Educate yourself before you buy. You will be happy that you did, and so will your puppy. To many neglected and abused dogs out there, don't make your dog one of them.
