A Worthy Cause - Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who made May a really good month for Lucy's Dog House. As a direct result I was able to send a modest donation to www.desertdane.com.

For the month of June we have shifted our sponsorship to BHRR, Birch Haven Rescue and Rehab
Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation is a wonderful rescue. As with most dog rescues, they operate at a loss with a large portion of the operating expenses coming out of the pocket of the rescue owner’s. Birch Haven’s owners came out of pocket for over 20,000 dollars last year. The costs are high because they take in a lot of injured animals, get them healthy and then find new homes for them.

So I am trying to help out with a percentage of sales from my store.

The rescue gets 5% of gross sales normally.

Lucy was a little crazy today

I live in a house that backs right up to the water and I do not have a fence out back. From time to time I let Lucy out off the leash and she has a blast just running around. She is usually pretty good about it and is very responsive to voice control.

That is usually, today she decided she was going to take off and run and run and run. I went after her and she must have thought it was a big game because she just ran away from me.

I was in my slippers and here I am running up and down this beach at 6:30, shouting for Lucy to come back.

I am pretty sure some of my neighbors though I was the best neighbor theyever had.

I got inside with Lucy and I was a little upset but I just could not stay mad at her because she just had the biggest what I think is her grin on her face and she was waggin her tail like crazy.

Today Was a Good Day

Today was a good day for Lucy and Kona. We went to the dog park again. I know, I know all I write about is going to the dog park. Well it is because we all love to go. I like to go because all the people are just my speed and the dogs like to go because the other dogs are fun to play with.

It was pretty icy today and the dogs loved it. They don't mind sliding across the ice chasing after a ball. Lucy got a hold of a tennis ball and just ran and ran and ran with it. She thought she was so special with that ball.

Of course both of them got so muddy but not nearly as dirty as some of the dogs. There were a couple of yellow labs that just rolled in the mud. We could really use a self serve dog wash around here.

A Day At the Beach

Yesterday was a good day. I had heard from a friend of mine that one of the beaches down in Newport, RI was open to dogs off the leash at this time of the year. So we all packed into the car and drove down. We never found the exact right beach but just let the dogs run on a private beach and no one bothered us. We didn't stay too long because the wind was blowing pretty hard and it is still pretty cold.

Both Kona and Lucy had a great time at the beach. Lucy is an old pro at the beach scene. We used to take her to the beach in San Diego a couple times a month. She was running all over the place into the waves and back up onto the sand. She loves the water and has even tried to swim a couple of times. That hasn't gone too well but she still loves the water. Kona of course was in heaven being a lab. She was runnig in and out of the water with little regard for how cold it was.

Then tey saw some kids about a quarter mile down the beach and Kona just took off. That is the second time she has done that while we are the beach. Strange, huh. So I run after them and catch up and we walk back to the car and leave. We went to the dog park afterwards and it was Lucy's first time to that dg park so she was a little skitish. All in all they both had a good day and went to sleep as soon as we got home. They slept until dinner and then went right back to sleep after dinner. Tough to be a dog.

Lucy and Kona are doing great. It is really cold here and the big girl and little girl are asleep on the couch next to me. Kona has had a mild ear infection which is clearing up nicely and Lucy has been as nutty as ever. She loves to play tug of war with anyone that will play with her.

There are some toys that she just loves. Have you ever seen a great dane sneak up on someone. It is pretty hilarious. She sneaks up on Kona and takes the toy right out of Kona's mouth before Kona even realizes it is gone. Kona of course chases after her and they have a ton of fun together.

They have been really great lately. My girlfriend gets out of bed about a half and hour earlier than I do and both of the dogs jump into bed with me. Kona snores away and Lucy just kind of tries to stay warm.

My Lucy is a nut

My Lucy is a crazy nut. Yesterday I came home with my other dog Kona who was at daycare all day. Lucy who is always pretty excited when I come home took it to the next level. She was like a crazy dog runnign around the house. It was funny to see Kona, my chocolate lab puppy trying to get Lucy my 110 lb Great Dane under control. I took her outside and she ran laps on the grass and up and down our beach. She finally came in and was all wags and kisses.

She is my sweetheart though. She has that look like she is so happy to see me when I come home.
