Arrival Story:
My daughter Rachel wanted a Great Dane more than anything else in the world a couple of years ago. She was completely fixated on the breed after she met two when she was on vacation in Mexico. So, my ex-wife looked around for a Great Dane and found the Great Dane Rescue in San Marcos California and went to visit the rescue. At the time there was not a dog that was a good fit for her and the kids but she talked to the manager of the rescue for a while so he got a really good idea of what type of dog they were looking for. A couple of weeks later Lucy ended up at the rescue. Her then owners were not prepared to handle such a big energetic dog and Lucy caught and then ate a rabbit in front of their small children. Well the owner of the rescue thought that Lucy was a perfect fit for my ex-wife and kids, which she was. I met Lucy a few days later. I was initially opposed to the kids getting a Great Dane because of some of the problems that my aunt had had with her Great Dane years ago. But when I met Lucy it was love at first sight. She instantly became a member of the family and would come over when my kids would. Eventhough I would only see her 3-4 days a week she became more my dog than anyone else's. We would go on long walks in Mission Valley by the San Diego River and I handled a lot of her socialization and basic training. That went on for about a year and a half and then due to my work I had to move away. After a few months Lucy became too much for my ex-wife to handle. She called me up and asked if I wanted Lucy. Of course I did. Lucy was shipped out two days later. When I saw the cargo handlers offload her off the plane I knew something was wrong with her. She was ready to kill somebody she was so crazed in that crate. I immediately went up to her crate and after that all I heard was the twacking of her tail against the crate. I quickly let her out and she rolled over on her back and started squirming uncontrollably, she was so happy. Here I thought she wouldn't remember me. So now she lives with me, my girlfriend and our other dog Kona, a chocolate lab. Lucy and Kona became fast friends and play all day long, well whenever they are not napping. As I write this she is right by my side curled up on her side of the couch. She never leaves my side when I am home.

A Worthy Cause - Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who made May a really good month for Lucy's Dog House. As a direct result I was able to send a modest donation to www.desertdane.com.

For the month of June we have shifted our sponsorship to BHRR, Birch Haven Rescue and Rehab
Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation is a wonderful rescue. As with most dog rescues, they operate at a loss with a large portion of the operating expenses coming out of the pocket of the rescue owner’s. Birch Haven’s owners came out of pocket for over 20,000 dollars last year. The costs are high because they take in a lot of injured animals, get them healthy and then find new homes for them.

So I am trying to help out with a percentage of sales from my store.

The rescue gets 5% of gross sales normally.

Individuals can help out too. If you use the coupon code: rescue, when you checkout an additional 10 percent of the purchase price goes directly to the rescue for that month. Plus you still get 5% off of your purchase. So spread the word and let's help out one of our own and still get something great for your dog. Or if you like you can go to Birch Haven Rescue and Rehab and donate directly

Oh, one other thing, in addition to everything else, through the weekend I am running a 10 percent off sale on anything in the store.

All the best,

Hans

Lucy was a little crazy today

I live in a house that backs right up to the water and I do not have a fence out back. From time to time I let Lucy out off the leash and she has a blast just running around. She is usually pretty good about it and is very responsive to voice control.

That is usually, today she decided she was going to take off and run and run and run. I went after her and she must have thought it was a big game because she just ran away from me.

I was in my slippers and here I am running up and down this beach at 6:30, shouting for Lucy to come back.

I am pretty sure some of my neighbors though I was the best neighbor theyever had.

I got inside with Lucy and I was a little upset but I just could not stay mad at her because she just had the biggest what I think is her grin on her face and she was waggin her tail like crazy.

All the best,

Hans
