What’s New…

Well mommy got home from volunteering in Houston. She has so many awesome and funny stories. Mom said once people find out you love animals and aren’t afraid of them people will ask you to do some weird things.

Mom has washed dogs, cleaned cages and fed hungry animals from Sugar Gliders to Llamas. Just to let you know… those llamas make a nasty green spit. Mom told me she was glad that I don’t spit like that.

I was pretty happy to see mom when she got home. She is all sunburned and so many mosquito bites that she lost count. Mom got a mad case of poison ivy that covered her legs while trying to rescue a cat that was trapped in some weeds (poison ivy), she said it was well worth it so that the kitty could be rescued.

Mom said she had loads of fun, I am not sure if she is serious or not.

The best thing is… she sent my boyfriend Pipo his Halloween gift. I hope he lubs it as much as I luved giving it to him. Now he has my heart on his neck… BOL

Coco, you came along at the right time in my life.

You make me feel important and loved, you make me happy when I am defeated. You make me laugh when I am so overwhelmingly sad. You are my best friend and companion and I would not know what to do without you. I love you and would be lost without your companionship, Min Pin smile and that docked tail wagging so hard it moves your little body.

I love you

This is a special Tail of Devotion

Ike and Texas

Mommy has been a volunteer for the American Red Cross for over 20 years. She has gone to many disaster sights and seen many many disturbing sights over those years. She does have to say that the responders to Hurricane Ike were the fastest that she had ever seen. Yesterday mommy went to Galveston to help people who are stuck in their houses without electricity and running water, she delivered food and water to those who were in need. She met some older folks in Galveston who decided to ride out the storm; they had some amazing stories about riding out the storm so close to the seawall. It was amazing that these folks who the youngest is in her mid 70’s have decided to stay. Right now they are in need of medicines and dry clothes. Mom took some of their laundry to the hotel last night and the hotel supervisor will wash and dry them for delivery this afternoon. Thank you Rose for your offer to do this for them, your kindess will not be forgotten.

Mom also stopped by the Houston ASPCA shelter, primarily to look for Pinky the missing American Pit-bull that was a former Dogster DOD. She ended up spending the remainder of the day and most of the evening caring for pups who were in so much need. Mom told dad last night that that is the only reason why she does this kind of work; there is so much need for the animals. Please support the Houston ASPCA for their hard work, they are in need of monetary contributions to continue to care for these animals.

Slowly but surely power, phone and a sense or normalcy is returning to them. Which makes life so much better when trying to clean up from such a disaster.

Yesterday she was reminded about Hurricane Katrina and is grateful in the changes to the laws regarding pets and people going to the shelters to stay safe from the storms. No longer are beloved pets left behind to fend for themselves, when the family goes they go and are housed in a separate location that their hoomans, but they are safe, cared for and not left behind. Katrina still haunts mom to this day, wading in infected water to get to animals left behind by their loved ones.

Mommy gets to feel more connected when she can read what I have said on Dogster, get her webmail from work and her personal email. She can actually call and speak with daddy to check on how I am doing without her at home.

Please remember the people in Galveston and Houston tonight when you say your prayers.

Love from Houston… Mommy

Our 9/11 Story

Talk about a day never to be forgotten….

My hooman sister and mom went to New York to see mommy’s best friend Cliff and his wife Pam. They had plans to go to the NY Renaissance Faire the weekend before 9/11 and had a great time with Cliff and Pam, laughing and being silly. We also had plans that Monday night to go into the city and spend the night at their friend’s house and then spend the day with mommy’s other friend from college Cory, who was a trader at Goldman Sachs. They were planning to meet up with Cory that Tuesday afternoon for lunch and a tour of all the trendy SoHo Consignment shops for my hooman sister. Mommy tells that the Tuesday morning mom heard Cory leave for work and decided to get Ashley (my hooman sister) out of bed to see the Statue of Liberty that morning before they went for lunch with Cory and then an afternoon of shopping in SoHo. Mommy decided to go to the roof of Cory’s building since they just added a new green space up there and enjoy the beautiful morning, she sat drinking her coffee and listening to the sounds of the city, mommy remembered why she loved Manhattan. The hustle and bustle of the cars driving, the honking horns, she could just imagine the people rushing to their important jobs.

She remembers the roar of one of the planes in the sky and got scared, not really knowing what was going on. She turned on the TV in Cory’s apartment and watched as Robin was turning over a very important news story to Diane Sawyer. Mom said to herself …. this is not a good thing, just then to mom’s horror another plane slammed into the World Trade Center. Mommy started to cry, Ashley my sister ran to see why mommy was crying. Mom was worried about Cory but didn’t know what to do, she called Cliff and he told her to stay at Cory’s and he would come and get us.

Within minutes mom and Ashley had packed up their suit cases and waited for Cliff on the street. Cliff pulled up in his company truck and told us to get in, they were planning to close the streets getting out of the city. Cliff knew mommy couldn’t walk that far, since the motorcycle accident and got us out of the city. Mom sat as she watched the Towers and all the black smoke and terrible sight that she was witnessing. We drove the rest of the way back all the way from Manhattan to Long Island then to Dobbs Ferry, NY in silence, everyone in shock from what was unfolding. They were on the road for hours, listening to the news.

When they finally got back to Cliff’s house, he pulled mom aside and told mom that things did not look good for Cory that his office was on the floor (s) that Cory worked on. Mom said that if Cory was able he would be able to walk down all those stairs and should hold out hope that he will be fine. Time ticked by, mom tried to find a car or some way for she and Ashley to get home, since the planes and trains had stopped running. The day ticked by, mommy tried several times to call Cory with no luck but she kept praying and hoping for the best. But she knew in her heart of hearts that Cory had gone to God.

Mommy missed Cory every day, she misses her best friend, she feels sorry that he didn’t get married like planned in December, she was sorry she slept in that morning instead of getting up and having coffee with him. She misses his laughter and stupid jokes, she just feels empty for loosing her best friend of 20 years. She still remembers him on his birthday and that dreaded day 9/11. She wonders why people hate us so badly that they would do such a terrible thing, all in the name of God. Her God is the same as their God and though mighty she also knows God is forgiving, which is more that those men were that morning to all those people.

In the years that have passed mom has made the pilgrimage to NYC to share a glass of mead with Cory, to hear the chiming of the bell, to hear the names called out, to cry and grieve with those who have lost someone special in their life.

This year will be different; mom has a new job and won’t be able to go, so on this sad and tragic day please say a prayer for all those souls who lost their lives on that day. Also say a prayer for those that have been left behind and miss their lovers, spouses and friends who still think and grieve for them.

NASCAR Driver Carl Edwards and a sweet story about a boy- with MS

Edwards gives MIS trophy to wheelchair-bound teen: A wheelchair-bound Michigan teen got a special gift from one of his heroes over the weekend. Pat and Teresa Byrnes took their son Cody to the Michigan International Speedway so he could see his favorite driver, #99-Carl Edwards, race. "Carl happened to be walking by and we gave him a thumbs up and Cody gave him a thumbs up and he saw his flag waiving on the back of Cody's chair. And so he stopped, turned around and came back and he came over and he signed his wheelchair and he signed his shirt," said Teresa Byrnes. The Byrnes were already excited that Cody got to meet his hero, but they weren't prepared for what Carl Edwards told Cody next. "He looked at him and he said, 'Hey buddy, I'll tell you, if I win that trophy today, now that's if I win, I'll give you that trophy'," Teresa recalled. The Byrnes say they began to realize Edwards could win the race when he moved from the 27th spot to first place in about 60 laps. Pat Byrnes says that's the most nervous he's ever been during a race. Edwards did win that race. Carl Edwards signed the trophy for Cody with the initials NGU, which means never give up. "Cody, everyday he wakes up and sees it. It's like he's realizing it's really his and he'll get excited and squeal, for someone to work so hard to get that trophy and then to say, 'Here, you can have it'. That is the kindest gesture anybody has ever done," said Teresa

A Dog's Purpose (from a 6-year old).

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolf hound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy..

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

Mom’s Traumatic Morning

June 24th 2008 8:13 am

This morning mom was on her way to work and as she turned onto the main road, Highway 74 she saw out of the corner of her eye a brown dog running across the main drag highway. As she turns the on to 74 she sees a car with a white puppy under it and the man inside is trying to pull the white puppy out from under his car, as he does he leaves the white puppy who is crying and biting the man pulls away leaving the puppy in the middle lane of the highway.

My mommy sees all of this pulls her truck into the median and runs into morning traffic to try to rescue the puppy. My mom is such a goof, she leaves the truck running, her purse on the front seat and doesn’t look back to make sure that it will be ok.

Mom is going to rescue the puppy, she doesn’t care if she gets bit, and she knows the puppy is scared and hurting. Some nice man pulls up next to mommy in the middle lane of the highway, tells her that he will pick the puppy up and place it in the back of her truck.

Mom thanks the man, and takes the white pup to Dr. Barker’s office at Sun Valley Animal Hospital. She pulls in and one of his vet techs is standing outside having a smoke and runs over to help the pup. Mom carries the pup into his office and learns that the puppy has fractured its hip and broken its back legs in several places. Dr. Barker tells mommy that the best thing to do for the white pup is to euthanize it. Mom cries and cries not wanting to have such a sweet creature put to sleep, but she understands that is the right thing to do. She says a prayer for the puppy and tells the puppy that our big dog, Rausch will meet white pup at the rainbow bridge and take him to a place where cars don’t run puppies over and fields are covered in soft green grass and there are bowls of cool water and tons of favorite treats.

As mom heads to the office, she writes down a phone number to a wrinky dink used car lot and this morning calls to ask if they own a white puppy and a red dog. The person answering says yes, and mommy tells the man that his white puppy will not be coming home because it was run over this morning. The man did not say anything to mommy, but mommy wanted him to know he must be responsible and cage or chain up his dogs so not to be road kill.

Sometimes I am glad mommy is tough and has a strong conviction for doing the right things for dogs… I also know I am very lucky to have a safe, loving home where I am not worried about getting hit by cars and the hardest part of my life is finding cookies mommy hides for me while she is at work.
