12/16/06 - We rescued Kota through the Wisconsin Adopt A Golden Retriever (WAAGR) group. Kota is originally from Missouri, where his family surrendered him. We found out about Kota just after we put our long time companion Casey to sleep. We loved him the moment we met him, so we got our paper work processed and a few weeks later brought him home to our family.
Kota is fitting in with his new "sisters" famously! He and Lucy are typical "siblings" in that they act like they don't like each other, but if they get seperated they miss each other terribly. Recently Lucy went back to South Bend with Gary and Kota stayed with me. Kota searched frantically for Lucy through the house and out in the yard. Gary reported that our normally obnoxious Lucy, was a mope for the entire weekend. When they were reunited they chased and played.
We recently took Kota out on the boat instead of Lucy. Kota loved the ride and was smiling the entire time. So we settled into a fishing spot. I caught a fish that was not a keeper so I tossed it back. While adjusting my hook we both heard a "kerploosh"! It was Kota jumping overboard to "retreive" my fish. He promptly swam back when called and shook off in the boat. Kota was smiling and looked like he wanted to go in again. We return fish to the lake in a far more stealthy mode now that we know the boy likes to swim!
Kota has also started to exhibit his "counter surfing" technique. While I was in Bowling Green with my Dad, I received a frantic call from the sitter wanting to know what kind of chocolate product HAD been in some sort of container. They only thing left was the bottom metal piece of the cardboard container of coffee additive. Luckily the chocolate content was not enough to warrant a trip to the vet. The amazing thing is how far BACK on the counter you can put something and Kota will still get it if he wants it. Our kitchen looks very spacious now that only appliances are on the counter!
