Arrival Story: When I was nine my parents decided we could finally get a dog. We owned a house, we weren't going to move for another 2 1/2 years (at least, due to dad's job we move a lot!) and I was showing more responsibility (I was unaware they had decided this!)
We went to the shelter (this is in Kodiak, Alaska) to get a puppy from a litter that one of the dogs had. All the puppies had been claimed. We go to leave and we see this dog lying in the middle of the pen curled in a small ball. I sweet-talk her over and it was love at first sight! She was so scared of everything. They brought her out and let us play with her (mostly she laid on the ground submitting) and I was hooked. They told us her story:
She'd been running in the woods with a pack of dogs out in Larsen Bay and killing deer and other animals to survive. She came in with internal parasites and filthy! She'd been at the shelter for 1 1/2 months, and only one family had shown a slight interest in her, since she was so shy.
We got in the car to leave and my mom handed me a card explaining that I could get one of the puppies for my birthday, but since they'd all been taken I begged for Amber (then called Goldie, originally Blondie) and they said yes! I have been rehabilitating her ever since. She was scared of EVERYTHING, newspapers, men, the bathroom, balls being thrown and other dogs.
December 9th, 2006, She passed the Therapy Dogs International test! All my work has paid off! I can't believe no one wanted this dog, yet alone bet her and abandoned her in the woods!
However, due to a processing error, she wasn't accepted as a TDI dog. I am going to register with another group now!
