Around the yard... OOO he loves to explore! An Acre is a lot of ground for a Chi!
I've had Lupe (see Jakes family members) for about 4 years now... I've been looking for another Chi to have for her, as Lupe's companion and hopefully playmate for the last two years. All she did was guard pillows... she wouldn't play with anything but me and that's only when I would force the play. I didn't want her to be a pillow guard... I wanted her to have a friend to play with and to be happy.
This fall I contacted Homeward Bound rescue locally, and began to meet dogs. Jake was about the 5th dog I'd met. I was looking for a dog that was not afraid of other dogs, liked to play, and who would be assertive enough to drage Lulu out of her shell and off the pillows for play. On my first visit to meet Jake I really liked him, but he was very tentative of me. Rather skittish of people. I know only that he came from an abusive home from which a friend of that family rescued him, but couldn't keep him or didn't want him - that's how he ended up at HBPR. On that first visit I wittnessed him having a seizure. After the seizure he went inot the far corner of one of the kennels and wouldn't come out. I was worried about him. That concerned me... I didn't want another dog right now that needed special care. On my second visit shortly after he was neutered, the HPBR owner said he'd not had any more seizures and that the vet cleared him as healthy. On my third visit I asked if we could set up a home visit. They came, they met, Lulu loved him, he stayed! It was rough for a while, but it's all good now.
He doesn't seem to like his name let alone will he answer to it. I'm not sure what kind of abuse he experienced, but I suspect it was neglect and his people generally treating him harshly. He doesn't act like he's been beaten, but he definately acts like he's been handled roughly and probably yelled at.
He follows me everywhere I go, right at my heels, yet he doesn't know how to held for the sole purpose of cuddling. He cannot resist licking... that's where the nickname 'Turbo Tongue' comes in. I don't like the licking... we're working on it slowly, but I believe we're still gaining his trust. He's still having accidents in the house regularly, but if you could see his own disposition, the guilty and scared look in his eyes, and the way he crouches even closer to the floor and cowers.. you couldn't discipline him either. For now, I'm letting it go. All that carpet is coming out anyway this spring... I'm most concerned that he finds his confidence and realizes eventually, that this is his home.
He is Lupe's dog... but he's a mammas boy too!
