tummy rubs, retrieving anything, playing frisbee w/ chucky chuck-it, chewing pinecones, playing in the snow, swimming, and getting on the bed when I think I can get away with it.
Praticing my obedience training, not being allowed to play ball in the house, and the chipmunks and squirrels that raid the pots of flowers on the deck in the summer. They sit right at the edge of the deck and thumb their little noses at me, GRRR!
TENNIS BALLS!!!!! But I also like my doggie frisbee and squeaky toys (and moms shoes when I feel like throwing caution to the wind)
Besides my dry food, I like peanut butter, cottage cheese, carrotts, and bully sticks
Anyplace that my mom goes, and anyplace where I can be off leash
Well I can sit, stay, down and those types of things but they aren't seen as tricks in our house.(darn it!) I like to play doggie frisbee and sometimes I'll jump in the air to catch it so I guess that could be a trick, eh?
My pawrents had decided that after two years without a dog - their dog Buddy, a yellow lab, had gone to the bridge after 14 great years - it was time for another dog. The vet recommended a breeder: they came, they saw.....and I came home with them! For the three hour drive home I got to sit in my mom's lap and during that time an invisible umbilical cord grew between us! It is really short when she is in the kitchen and really, really, really long when I smell something rank to eat out in the yard, hehehe!
I won't eat the blue suede shoes!

Today is Mothers Day and since I am the only "kid" in the house, the duty of getting something for mom fell upon my shoulders. I saw some flowers in our local florist that I thought mom would like, so I tried to buy them but they wouldn't accept payment in the form of bully sticks or tennis balls.
Sheeesh! Any of my dogster pals would have accepted either of those in a split second, but no, not the lady at the flower shop. She insisted upon funny little slips of paper, of which I had none. (I recall having chewed up some of these previous slips of paper in my puppy days, but it never occured to me to save them because they'd be worth something.) I had to hit my dad up for a loan....thanks dad.
Mom really liked the flowers, however I must inform the dogster world that buying flowers for mom does not entitle you to a "Get out of Jail Free" type of card like you'd find in the Monopoly game. I discovered this after dinner time, when I tried to sneak the leftover piece of bread from mom's plate while it was still in front of her.
Perhaps I should have just skipped the flowers and bought myself some tennis balls instead......

I am not my parents first lab. Mom grew up with labs, and my Dad had a yellow lab, Buddy, when he and mom first met. And pretty much anyone and everyone knows the obvious - that labs are hunting dogs and as such we have extremely good noses that allow us to excel at sniffing out the scent of birds or whatever our prey at the moment might be. It could be a piece of peanut butter toast on the counter, a squirrel on the deck, one of mom's expensive new leather pumps, you name it. If it smells, and it doesn't matter if the humans think it smells "good" or "bad", we want to find it and most likely eat it. That having been established, you'd think that my mom would know that when I smell something really, really good my instincts are going to kick in and I am going to follow that scent....
For the past week, there has been a strong aroma lingering outside our house and even in the garage. I didn't know what it was and it seemed to be coming from just up the hill from our house. I heard mom tell dad that she was worried that a skunk had taken up residence nearby, perhaps under our deck. Skunk?? I didn't know what that is, but if it was the source of that exquisite (so I thought) smell that was wafting around, I had to find it. I convinced mom that I had to go outside to do my bidness and once outside, that smell was just too much for me to take. I took off up the hill, and when mom yelled at me to return (COOPER! HERE!) - well, lets just say years of breeding and instinct overruled common sense and I looked at her once....and continued up the hill. At a very fast pace. I was determined to find that smell once and for all. Mom caught up a moment or two later and just as I discovered the source of the smell, she jerked me up by the collar so hard that she nearly pulled all 85lbs of me off the ground. I thought that black and white thing on the ground smelled so good that I wanted to roll on it to embed that lovely aroma on my fur as much as possible. Mom, however, being human and having a lesser developed sense of smell than mine, thought differently.
Turns out the black and white thing was indeed a skunk that had fallen prey to a coyote or perhaps a hawk. And now I look at mom and dad with pity because they have NO idea of what truly smells good....
