Arrival Story:
DJ spent her first year living outdoors without good socialization with people, but with another dog. The owner (the grandmother of the teenager to which DJ had been given, as a puppy, as a gift) couldn't deal with young, indoor puppies. The kid wasn't interested. DJ got food, water, shelter, but not much attention, and not much love. --- When she was 11 months old, the grandmother placed DJ with a rescue agency, to her credit, rather than bringing her to the pound. She was very shy, and perhaps not "adoptable" in a pound setting. --- We found DJ at the rescue fair. I bent over to say hi. The shy little dog licked my nose. (She almost never goes that near someone she hasn't gotten to know well.) Her previous owner brought her to our house the next day. --- DJ was afraid of linoleum. She had no idea how to live inside. Now, of course, she's gotten pretty used to pillows and sofas and roast beef. --- We chose the best dog for us, she chose the best family for her.

Bio:
She's very much a chow/lab mix, with a nice blend of lab body with chow body, and lab personality with chow personality (a little heavy on the chow in that department.) She's a compulsive watchdog. She loves playing with other dogs, but prefers to watch new people from a distance. -- DJ came to us via Furry Friends (http://furryfriendsrescue.org/), who are great at making sure dogs go to appropriate homes. Please check your local pound and rescue groups when it's time to choose a dog, and avoid backyard breeders and pet stores.
