Arrival Story:
We purchased Whizzy in July, 1995 to be a companion to Ascii. She was a cutie! She was never as active as Ascii, always a bit shy and very sweet.
Bio:
Whizzy developed a seizure disorder when she was about 4 years old. At first, her seizures were short and not very disabling. Over time, they became more frequent and debilitating.
We did everything we could...she took phenobaribitol, KbR, and we were looking into acupuncture. But in July, 2002 she had a grand mal seizure that lasted the whole time we were transporting her to the emergency vet, about 45 minutes. She had been oxygen deprived during a good part of that time. We did not want to prolong her suffering, taking a chance that her already-diminished quality of life would be even poorer with the effects of this seizure, so we let her go to the Rainbow Bridge.
We do not know what caused the seizures. At that time, it was thought that Pug Dog Encephalitis was a younger dog's disease, so we did not have her autopsied for that (sadly, there is no test that can be done before death). Now there are some vets who believe that PDE can affect older dogs. However, Whizzy did not exhibit all the classic symptoms of PDE. I still feel that she had some form of canine epilepsy, as she did live with her seizures for 3 years.
