A Dog's Prayer
By Beth Norman Harris

My Beloved Master, for not heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness
then the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick for though I
should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding
will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me
often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the
fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear. When
it is cold and wet, please take me inside...for I am now a domesticated animal,
no longer used to the bitter elements...and ask no greater glory than the privildge
of sitting at your feet beside the hearth...though you had no home, I would rather
follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest
home in all the land...for you are my Devoted Worshipper. Keep my pan filled
with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell
you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play
and do your bidding, to walk by your side and stay ready, willing and able to
protect you with my life, should your life be in danger. And Beloved Master,
should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away
from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful
boon to eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I draw,
my fate as ever safest in your hands.

OH HAPPY DAY

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

...Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!

Precious Pet Time

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle. You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrongdoing for just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask.
To slow down, if even for a few minutes, to be with me.

So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that
screen, of other of my kind passing. Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at
you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is
always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land. I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "One more day" with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together.

So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my
eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as "alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes, and talk. I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may
tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general.
You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you, and here I am.

I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and
I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls.
I do not think of you as a "Dog on two feet" -- I know what you are.
You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.
Now, come sit with me, on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow
down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short. --

Love, (on behalf of canines everywhere)

I thought you might want to read and ponder the message this little dog is sending (in between the tears) and forward it on to those you
cherish.

PITCHING IN FOR THE ANIMALS
Dear Friends,

This is an urgent call for assistance. SPCA International is experiencing a dire decrease in donations and we need your help. We know these are tough economic times, but if you can spare just $5, $10, $15 or more, you will allow us to continue helping animals everywhere. Without your support, we may be forced to cut back animal assistance programs in the months ahead.

Let me tell you about one of the amazing animals we were able to rescue recently. Mama Leesa was homeless and pregnant. She gave birth to seven puppies in a sewer because it was the only safe place she could find. Every day she waded up to her stomach in sewage to get out and eat so she could nurse her pups. She had to do whatever it took. Unfortunately, she couldn’t find enough food and sadly all her puppies were lost. But, with one final stroke of grace she was able to find safe haven with SPCA International.

Now, we’re proud to report that Mama Leesa has made a full recovery and she has been given a second chance. Today she is living in Virginia with her new family. She has gained strength, new happiness, security and a forever home in the wake of her terrible tragedy.

We hope Mama Leesa’s story will inspire you to give a financial gift today. Please donate to SPCA International and help us continue to save animals just like her.

All animals deserve a good, loving home, but without your help we may have to make some tough decisions that will cut back on how many animals we are able to save. Like us, I think you want SPCA International to be able to help any animal we find. Please, donate now. We cannot accomplish this without you!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

For the animals,

JD Winston
Executive Director

The Spirit Of A Dog

The Spirit Of A Dog

I was standing on a hillside
In a field of blowing wheat,
And the spirit of a dog
Was lying at my feet.

He looked at me with kind dark eyes,
Ancient wisdom shining through.
In the essence of his being,
I saw the love there too.

His mind did lock upon my heart
As I stood there on that day,
And he told me of this story
About a place so far away.

As I stood upon that hillside
In a field of blowing wheat,
In a twinkling of a second
His spirit left my feet.

His tale did put my heart at ease,
All my fears did fade away
About what lay ahead of me
On another distant day.

"I live among God's creatures now
In the heavens of your mind,
So do not grieve for me, my friend
As I am with my kind.

My collar is a rainbow's hue,
My leash is a shooting star.
My boundaries are the Milky Way
Where I sparkle from afar.

There are no pens or kennels here
For I am not confined,
But I'm free to roam God's heavens
Among the Doggie kind.

I nap the day on a snowy cloud
Gentle breezes rocking me,
And dream the dreams of earthlings,
And how it used to be.

The trees are full of liver treats,
And tennis balls abound,
And milkbones line the walkways
Just waiting to be found.

There even is a ring set up,
The grass all lush and green;
And everyone who gaits around
Becomes the Best of Breed.

For we're all winners in this place;
We have no faults, you see.
And god passes out those ribbons
To each one, even me.

I drink from waters laced with gold,
My world a beauty to behold;
And wise old dogs do form my pride
To amble at my very side.

At night I sleep in angel's arms,
Her wings protecting me,
And moonbeams dance about us
As stardust falls on thee.

So when your life on earth is spent
And you stand at Heaven's gate,
Have no fear of loneliness--
For here, you know, I wait".

Help Your Dog Through Fireworks And Frightful Forecasts
Content Provided By Central Life Sciences

Central Life Sciences (ARA) - Summer has arrived and the Fourth of July is just around the corner. For families, that means more fun and festivities, but for pets it can become a stressful time due to increased sudden noise such as thunderstorms and fireworks.

"The summer can be a difficult time for pets with the noise of fireworks and neighborhood commotion. However, recognizing these changes in your dog's environment, and planning ahead, can decrease the amount of discomfort your pet experiences," says Debra Nickelson, D.V.M. "Using pheromone-based products such as Comfort Zone with D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone), is great for overly-agitated dogs, as it helps them remain calm in unfamiliar or stressful scenarios."

"My dog Edy is fairly calm overall, but whenever there is thunder or loud noises he shakes uncontrollably, whimpers and hides in our bedroom," says Eric Kardesh, pet parent of a 2-year-old vizsla. "To make him feel calm, I always make sure his favorite blanket is in his crate, and I give it a few sprays of Comfort Zone which helps him feel safe and less stressed."

The days following the Fourth of July are often the busiest of the year for many animal shelters recovering lost dogs. To ensure your dog is safe, keep him at home and plan ahead with these simple solutions:

* Keep your dog indoors in a confined and secure area to help him feel safe and secure.
* Put a favorite toy or blanket with your dog for added reassurance.
* Calming products, such as Comfort Zone, can soothe dogs having trouble coping with stress.
* Keep the shades closed and turn on the TV or radio to drown out unfamiliar noise.

"Usually I'll find someone to pet sit during the Fourth of July," says Rachel Van Buskirk, pet parent of a 6-year-old pug. "But when I can't find anyone for the day, it seems to help if I leave some music to distract my dog from outside noises."

If you're planning on taking your companion with you for fireworks or neighborhood festivities, it is important to make sure you are prepared. When out and about with your dog this summer season, keep in mind the following tips:

* Keep your dog on a leash or in an animal carrier at all times.
* Do not leave your dog in the car, they heat up quickly and can cause health problems.
* Double-check to make sure your dog is wearing current identification.
* Consider getting a microchip for your dog.
* Make sure to bring some treats and a water bowl to keep your dog hydrated.
* Know your dog's temperament. If your dog is not good with crowds, leave him at home.
