Homer was the last dog we rescued during the making of my indie film called FREE to a Good Home (fghmovie.com). We had been out filming and interacting with strays, feeding some my friend would feed downtown. (we meaning my lead actress Katherine Norland and I) katherinenorland.com
We had just a little bit of food left in the bag we were using to feed strays. And saw one last dog. I told Katie, lets give that dog the rest of the food, I only have a few minutes of tape left and my battery is almost dead so good timing that we are out of food.
I filmed Homer as we drove past to create the improv'd scene. Katie was a pro at just getting in there being the character (an animal rescuer as she is NOT a rescue, just a very good actress).
So as I filmed Homer Katie walked over to him, not getting too close and dumped out the food. He did not want food. Soon he was licking Katies hand, then face as she sat down next to him. She petted him and then brought the empty bag back across the street to the car all the while being filmed. Homer got up and followed her back to the car.
We had rescued so many animals during the making of the film, friends and fellow rescuers said... dont bring any more back... As it only took a few minites for us to come and find stray animals to film with in So and East LA.
I kept rolling as the dog, now called Homer, followed Katie and soon she was trying to lift him into the back of my 4runner.
It is the most hysterical footage ever. Homer, had no idea what was going on. But was the most mellow dog and for his size completely not sure. Katie lifted the 60 lb animal onto the open tailgate and NORMALLY this is where the dog would... scramble up and into the back of the car. But not Homer. He just lay there. Spread eagle with his front paws. With Katie left holding his backend, trying to push him into the truck. My camera shook as I started laughing and finally with one big push he was IN. And looking as confused as always.
Then on the way up to my second floor apartment we learned that Homer, although he was about 1 years old. Had never seen steps in his life. Katie again,
heaved him up two flights of stairs.
He did the spread eagle thing again when I took him into PETCO for a collar and leash. Homer, although he is now 70 lbs never gained in bravery what he has in size.
So this scene of Homer is the end rescue scene in the movie. You should see it. I hope you do.
