Arrival Story:
I teach at a school and our custodian flagged me down on my way in last October (2005). She had come across this dog just laying on the side of the road not moving. She covered the dog with a blanket, but she was afraid to move the dog. She called animal control, but they weren't on duty yet (I'm glad they didn't come - she would've been euthanized). I scooped her up and put her in the back of my van. She didn't try to bite and she didn't cry. She was awfully dirty and didn't look healthy. She also looked old. Luckily, my sister was on her way to drop off her son for school. I flagged her down, put the dog in her car, and asked her to please drop the dog off at my vet to see what was going on. As it turns out, she was heartworm positive, infested with fleas and whipworms (she had awful diahreah) and this made her not want to even walk. I had the vet do an x-ray to see how bad the heartworms were and bloodwork to see if she was healthy enough to start treatment within a couple of weeks (she needed to get rid of the fleas and whipworms first, and put on some weight). Shelby survived heartworm treatment with flying colors and has now been with me for a year and a month. She is a super sweet dog! She is no trouble at all. She is my little magnet. She follows me to the point I trip over her sometimes.

I unfortunately know nothing about her history except that she was given no medical attention for a long time. I think she was an outside dog because she was so awkward when I brought her in my house for the first time, and she wasn't housebroken (she was easy to train). She has lots of fatty deposits on her and recently had to have a huge one removed off of her hip. She is deaf (old age). She is doing great now.
