Arrival Story:
Louis was abused by his previous owners and ended up at animal control. When I walked down the aisle and saw his little face I knew he was going to be special. His hair was coarse, he was missing patches of hair, he had white paint all over him, and was malnourished. Still, he greeted me with a wagging tail and a gentle kiss on my finger. A trip to the vet discovered that he had a previous back injury that went untreated and that this injury (although healed) would cause him to have a unique gait. Still, he wagged his tail. Then, one fateful night, Louis' s breathing became labored --he was in distress. I rushed him to the emergency vet and they told me that he had to go in for emergency surgery--his chance for survival, slim. I was a wreck. I bawled my eyes out, wishing, hoping, praying that he would come home to me. Diagnosis? Diaphragmatic hernia--basically, his guts were in his chest. Since the injury had progressively gotten worse his prognosis was even poorer. How did this happen? Abuse by his previous owners. He was either kicked really hard or hit by a car (vet's guess). I couldn't fathom him dying, it wasn't fair, he deserved to have some happiness in life. He was in the oxygen chamber for 5 days and ICU for a week and then my little miracle boy came home!!!!! My little angel fought the odds, fought to get better, and now he's being spoiled rotten--the way it should have always been. Thanks to DARE, Louis was given a new chance at life. Thanks for reading.

I received word today from Louis's mom that he passed away Friday chewing a bone in the backyard. Louis would have been 10 next month. Thank you to Bobbie Jo for giving Louis the best life possible. He was so happy and his family adored him. He touched many hearts with his long nose, sloppy kisses and gentle eyes. It's a sad day for all of us but a happy day in heaven.
Your foster mom, brother and sisters will miss you!!! We love you, always!!!

I've been adopted!

This is Louis's old foster Mom. I just wanted everyone to know that Louis was adopted in May by a wonderful lady who volunteers for DARE--the rescue group that saved him. Before she came along, I thought that Louis was home and that it was only a matter of time before I'd complete the adoption. However, in the back of my mind something told me to wait just a little longer. Now I know why. Louis is doing great in his new home. He has really blossomed. He has two doxie sisters that are as sweet as they can be and he plays and romps around with them. He has grown in ways that he wasn't able to do in my house. It has been so bittersweet watching him grow into his own little self and be able to fully express his personality.
I get to see Louis quite frequently. Yes, that's right, I get to hold him, give him kisses, and snoodle with him! I can't tell you how great it is to be able to get to see him on a semi regular basis.
I will continue to update his page, his mom isn't on dogster yet, and will upload new pictures. Thank you for being Louis's friend and for reading his story. Look for more updates in the future!!

This weekend

My Foster Mom told me that her and I were going on a trip this weekend! That's right! It's just going to be her and I!!! She told me that we were going to an event in Gulfport, Fl, that was raising money for dachshunds and other rescues. She said that the money raised could go to dogs just like me who needed emergency, life saving surgeries. That would be great, I believe every dog and cat deserves a chance at living a long life.
She is also very excited that I get to meet other DARE members and volunteers. They have heard so much about me, prayed for me, and have kept me close to their heart. She is so happy that she gets to show me off!!!!
I heard it was going to be chilly so she promised me a warm blankie and bed. I'm sure I'll be standing beside her, or in her arms, the majority of the day, but for when I need a break from her--at least I'll be warm :)
Wish me luck. May be my forever home will be there and I'll get to meet them. Foster Mom says they have to be very special as I am very special to her.
