Arrival Story: One cold day in February of 2005, I found out that Ratbone Rescues needed some help getting 34 rat terriers out of a puppy mill in northern Indiana. I had never worked with the group before but knew they were short on help so my husband, son, sister-in-law and I said we would help. There were 3 others beside us representing the rescue group. It was a very cold day in Indiana. A sherrif and animal control officer took us to the puppy mill where the dogs were. The judge had given 24 hours to get the dogs off the property or they would all be put down. Between the 4 of us all 34 rat terriers were safely removed. Mia had been in the back yard with very little shelter. She was very frightened and only 5 months old. My husband had to pull her out from under some steps where she was hiding and we placed her in a crate. We took home a total of 6 dogs that day. The others were put into foster care but Mia stayed with us. She was a very sick girl. It must have been the first night in a very long time that she had been warm. She curled up on a bed in my mudd room and never made a sound all night. It was clear she was not familar with people. She was very frightened of all of us. I don't think she had ever even been held much. To this day she is afraid when you pick her up and she is very afraid of men.
We took her to the vet the first day and she was so full of worms the vet told me they would have killed her. She had a heart murmer from them that went away after treatment. The cheapest care you can give an animal and she didn't even get that. Her skin was full of missing patches of hair and her ears were rough, bumpy and had a moth eaten appearance to them. It took well over a month to get the smell off of her. It took 6 months before her fur started to look normal.
She has bloomed into a beautiful butterfly though. She is very attached to the one who made her well, her human mommy. She is still afraid of her daddy unless he is eating pretzels. But, she is learning how to trust and is doing much better and meeting new people and being brave. She loves to sleep under the covers at night. Her three best friends are her two fellow ratties, Triniti and Grace, and Mable the momma mutt. We are so glad to have Mia as part of our family. She has given us much more that we will ever be able to give her. She is a blessing.

Bio: Hello, my name is Mia. I had a pretty rocky start in life. I lived in a really cold place with a bunch of other dogs. We didn't get to eat much and I didn't feel very good. My mom and dad rescued me from that life and now I live in a really nice place with 3 other dogs. I love my doggie sisters. I look up to them and always do whatever they tell me. We like to all lay on mommies lap together. Most of all I love food! I had no idea you could live in a place where you get food every day. It's the greatest thing of all!!! I don't like to go outside if it's cold. I get really scared I might be stuck out there like before but so far that's not happened here. After I go out in the morning to do my business my mommy wraps me up in a warm blankie while she drinks her coffee. This is a pretty good place and I'm sure glad I'm here. I get so happy I stand and dance!
