Arrival Story:
I found Girl on PetFinder.com without a name or a history. She looked very skinny and scabby. I called the pound to ask for her name and info, but they said that all they knew about her was that she had been there too long and was about to be put to sleep. When I got to the pound, another man told me that a little old lady couldn't take care of her anymore, and brought her in. He said that the lady cried in the foyer there for about half an hour before handing Girl over.
Girl came to me with a love for riding in cars, as well as being housebroken, tolerating baths, liking being blow-dried and brushed, and knowing the english language! So, maybe she was well cared for. But she had spent so long in the pound that her skin suffered tremendously and she'd lost so much hair.
The pound was the sadest place I'd ever been. All of the dogs wanted me to take them, but I felt like I couldn't choose another dog because the reason I drove 45 mins out there was to get the nameless, scabby poodle mix. I saw her in her cage, and she wasn't barking. She just sat there making eyes that said, "I know you're coming for me. You have got to get me out of here!". I went back to the office and made one of the guys go and get her for me because I didn't want the other dogs to see me take her (too hard for me). She was soaking wet and filthy, but she couldn't WAIT to get in the car and sit on my younger sister on the way home!
When I got her home, I gave her a bath, but the bloody scabs and missing hair still seemed dirty. She had bad flea allergies. I let her sleep with me anyway. That night, whenever I would get up to go to the bathroom, she knew she couldn't let me out of her sight. So, she would jump down and walk beside me with her cheek pressed against my leg while looking up at me. She wouldn't let me go anywhere without touching my leg with her cheek. Today, she is still very attached to me, and won't let her eyes off of me no matter who's talking to her! I guess she knew that I was her ticket out of that horrible place.
She has settled in so well that it seems weird to have ever lived without her. She loves her step-cousin poodles, shepherd, and cats (my sisters' pets).
She LOVES wearing clothes. I design high end apparel for dogs, and she sometimes models them for me. I think she's just into the job because she enjoys keeping one of each for herself ;)
