In Japan, unwanted dogs have little chance

It's sad any time a dog is put to death because it's unable to find a home, but in Japan, the notion of euthanizing unwanted dogs has reached unbelievable heights.

Reuters reports that more than 70 percent of unwanted dogs in Japanese animal shelters are killed every year, according to the Japanese animal welfare organization ALIVE.

Compare that to the 6 to 9 percent of dogs in Britain that are put down, based on 2007-2009 figures.

More Japanese would prefer to get their puppies from pet stores, leaving thousands of loving and needy dogs at shelters. Those that aren't adopted are killed.

Briar Simpson, a New Zealander who works for ARK, Japan's animal shelter, told Reuters via email: "In Britain, the public go to animal welfare shelters to adopt an animal and save a life. The mindset in Japan is still ‘if you want a pet, go to a pet shop.'"

More than 118,000 dogs in Japan end up in pounds every year. Considering that there were more than 6.8 million dogs in the country in 2008 (more dogs than children under the age of six), it's a problem clearly in need of a solution. Education would be a first step.

I'm convinced if people knew the plight of so many thousands of wonderful animals, they would do something to ease the dilemma. Adoption is the way to go.

Carrie Underwood: I Hope My Dog Won't Eat My Wedding Ring!

For Carrie Underwood, including her dog on her wedding day was a total no-brainer.

"He'll be one of the ring bearers—he's like my kid," the Grammy-winning singer told reporters at the Bideawee animal shelter in Manhattan March 30. "If I was getting married and I had a child, of course my child would be the wedding. Ace is such a big part of my life."

The singer was in town to talk about her partnership with the Pedigree Adoption Drive, which donates a bowl of food to a shelter dog for each person who becomes a fan on Facebook.

"Fans can [also] help out by adopting a dog, or donating money. There's all kinds of little things they can do. My mom volunteers at the local shelter."

Underwood says she and her Canadian fiancé Mike Fisher look forward to adopting another dog, though not necessarily a roommate for Ace. "I definitely want another dog ... It all comes down to travel, but if we got one it would probably [live] more in Canada. Ace is so little, he can go everywhere with me. If we got a bigger dog it would be a little bit more of a challenge."

Speaking of, the singer says Ace's ring bearer duties won't go without careful consideration. Asked if her pet would walk down the aisle on the big day, Underwood laughed and said the job may need to be tailored to him.

"I don't know if I'll put the ring on him," she says. "I don't know if he'll run away with it or eat it or something!"
