   Leave a bone for Elmo

Nicknames:
Bunny, Buddy, Sweetness, Elmo-la, Elmo-lei, Muffin, Pumpkin, Princess, Scooby-butt

Quick Bio:
-mutt-pound dog

Likes:
"da mommie"; all human, cat, and dog food; long leisurely walks where he's free to sniff one spot forever; his many "aunts" (and some "uncles")

Pet-Peeves:
Jerky, nervous, or uninvited pets on belly and behind; skateboards, schoolbuses, and CTA buses in motion; humans attempting to steal his toys (other dogs are okay, though)

Favorite Toy:
A beige dog that resembles him named Nicki... the only dog that lets him hump him and shake him repeatedly

Favorite Food:
Whatever is in front of him or just out of his reach.

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere faaaaar away. He likes to drag his walker into the city of Chicago, to a cemetary where he used to play...

Best Tricks:
Bad tricks--staring at eaters, chin on eater's knee. Good trick--at the words "no begging," he sits down, lies down, and even looks away. He performs a fine roll in the grass (rarely stinky), though not exactly on command.

Arrival Story:
I had finally gotten an apartment that allowed dogs. I called the local shelter on Friday and asked if they had any small dogs for my not-so-spacious apartment. They said they had a cock-a-poo named "Elmo." The next day, Elmo met us in the foyer. He snapped at me once while we were getting acquainted, but he immediately tucked his head between a volunteer's hands. Elmo was a bit of a mess coat-wise, skin-wise, and emotional-wise... I didn't dare pick him up those first few days, but when I took him to a groomer two days later, she just scooped him right up under one arm and said, "Okay, Elmo, let's go." And he did. She removed all the matts and treated the red and broken skin beneath. Incidentally, I didn't know about the muppet when I got Elmo--thought he was named for the patron saint of sailors... or the fire that guides them home.

Bio:
Elmo has lived with me these 11 years in Southeast Evanston. A year after I adopted him, I got him a cat to keep him company (he didn't seem to take to other dogs, though we spent a lot of time in dog parks the first couple of years). They seem to provide companionship for each other, though they wouldn't call each other best buddies. Elmo had a stint as a Friday Dog-Day dog for a year or two at my job (before we switched to a no-dog, no-really-no-dog building) and that opened him up to a new world of cubicles and welcoming humans with snacks for him. It was great while it lasted, and the benefit lives on in him--he's much more brave and friendly than he was before, and a lot more eager with new people.
