we tzus have been puckering up ready to kiss under the mistletoe but we have come across some rules...
Debrett's, the last word on impeccible social etiquette, is advising Christmas party goers to avoid a full festive kiss on the lips under the mistletoe this year to avoid spreading swine flu.
The experts claim polite social kissing – a brief touch of your cheek on the other person’s – was more hygienic than a handshake and so it was safe to continue that festive tradition.
But the guide says people should not kiss on the lips, ‘leave a saliva trace’ or allow a hand to wander. Air kissing and any ‘mwah’ sound effects should also be avoided.
“Because of the spread of swine flu this year, people have started to think they might not jump under the mistletoe quite as readily this season," said Debrett's etiquette adviser, Jo Bryant, said:
“But it’s medically proven that a peck on the cheek is much more hygienic than a handshake.
“People carry billions more germs on their hands so ‘cheek-to-cheek’ kissing is a healthier greeting by far.”
The guide advises anyone feeling unwell to stay at home, rather than go to a party and spread swine flu. A ‘target’ should be willing so no embarrassment is caused, it is polite to ask first and do not get too close during the kiss itself.
It is customary to kiss the other person’s right cheek first and you should decide in advance whether to kiss both cheeks or just one. Afterwards, thank the other person and wish them a merry Christmas.
Kissing with a mouthful of food or drink is also frowned upon, as is rejecting a festive kiss. Debrett’s also advises keeping away from the mistletoe if you have had too much to drink as ‘social skills will be impaired’.
Mrs Bryant said British people were unused to kissing people they meet and Debrett’s was often asked about how to deal with mistletoe encounters.
“Unlike a lot of people in foreign countries, we don’t kiss each other as soon as we meet, so people want to know what’s acceptable and what isn’t,” Mrs Bryant said.
“Personal space is a big issue for a lot of people, regardless of whether there is a national swine flue outbreak.
“People are more aware of spreading germs this year and there is a certain set of manners surrounding this.
“If you are going to kiss under the mistletoe this year, people should remember others may not want your lurgy over Christmas just for the sake of a peck.”
Auctioneer Nick Champion, who leads the annual Tenbury Wells mistletoe auctions, said he feared growers could suffer financially because of fears about swine flu.
“The last thing we need is people worrying about kissing at Christmas and we’re really hoping that people aren’t going to be put off buying mistletoe because of some health scare,” he said.
Quinn thought....................... well personally I think a good bum sniff is perfectly acceptable...hehehehe...wanna trade sniffs?!?!?!?!?!?!:P
Police have released CCTV footage of a blind woman's guide dog being savaged by a terrier-type dog at a railway station.
The attack happened as the 57-year-old woman walked through Cricklewood station, in north-west London.
British Transport Police appealed to anyone with information about the attack which took place at about 1330 on 4 October.
Police said: "This dog was not muzzled and was dangerously out of control."
Safety fears
That Sunday afternoon, the woman passed a man drinking a can of beer in an underpass who was with the dog at his feet.
The unleashed dog ran towards her and attacked her brown Labrador.
The owner kicked and punched his dog in a bid to stop the attack.
The Labrador was left needing emergency veterinary care for deep puncture wounds to its neck.
"The woman was extremely distressed and feared for her own safety," Pc Gerry Griffin said.
"What made this awful incident even more harrowing was the fact that the man made no effort to assist her or to check that she was all right once the attack was over.
"The owner would do well to hand himself in as his animal poses a clear danger to other dogs and to the public."
The man was described by police as white, in his mid to late-20s, around 5ft 11ins and of slim build.
He had a cropped beard and brownish to red hair which was cut short and was wearing black tracksuit bottoms and a grey top.
