Arrival Story:
I was blessed with Rocky when I was 12 years old and just graduated from junior high school. I had begged my mom for years to let me have a dog, but since we lived in an apartment, it was hard to find a suitable dog. However, my mom's friend who owned a pet shop knew I wanted a dog badly. The evening after my graduation, my mom and I went into the shop just to look at and play with the puppies, like we frequently did. Then my mom's friend offered me a dog, and he said I could pick any one I wanted. I looked at all the cute puppies and chose an adorable Schnauzer puppy. He was about 6 weeks old and VERY friendly, I fell in love with him. However, I looked around some more and discovered Rocky. He was much larger than the other puppies but still inside a small cage. I asked my mom's friend to see him, but he told me that Rocky was not a good choice. Rocky had been returned by his previous owner because the owner (after having owned him for about 3-4 months) decided he was too much responsibility. Rocky was already 6 months old by the time I first saw him. My mom's friend said that he was going to bring Rocky to a shelter soon because he was unable to sell him. He said that when most people want to buy a dog, they want it much younger and prefer ~6 weeks, Rocky was already 6 months. I still insisted on seeing him, and boy was it worth it! It was magic as soon as we looked at each other. His big sad brown eyes called to me and I picked him up and hugged him. Rocky's fur was all knotted and dirty, he wasn't even able to stand up because his legs were so weak from sitting in an inadequately small cage. I immediately decided he was the one I wanted, I picked him up and ran straight hom with him (I lived only 2 blocks away). I got my graduation clothes all dirty (my white silk blouse), but I didn't care, Rocky was PERFECT! Since then, its been smooth sailing. We've made great memories together, and he is and always will be, my best friend. I never had any siblings, except for Rocky :o) he's like my little brother!

Rocky's Condition

Rocky has been lethargic and weak for a few days now. Yesterday he had an appetite, but not today. I tried to feed him human food breakfast and lunch but he only took a few small nibbles and left the rest. I'm giving him 12.5 mg of Lasix twice a day but it doesn't appear to be doing much for his breathing. Hopefully tomorrow will bring some good news. Rocky's appointment from the cardiologist is at 9:30AM and we were informed that he might need IVs since he'd not in good condition. I'm hoping something can be done for him, at least for the summer... its his favorite season and I want him to enjoy it.

Rocky is Ill

To all of Rocky's friends, I have some sad news. Rocky is suffering from kidney and heart failure. We have an appointment for Friday with a cardiologist to look at his heart. The Lasix medication he was originally taking to drain fluid from his heart caused problems with his kidneys. The problem is the treatments for these diseases causes the other to get worse. The kidneys need MORE fluid going through the system, while the heart (which is already weak and overworked) needs LESS fluid going through. We will find out on Friday ho bad it is.

Rocky suddenly became ill about a month and a half ago, around the end of April. He was finally at a healthy weight (Rocky used to weigh 22lbs) at 17lbs and enjoying nice daily walks in the spring. However, around that time I noticed that he no longer wanted to go on walks and slept alot more. His condition got worse until about a week before our vacation to Hawaii, which was starting to look like a terrible idea. A week before we left, he suddenly began to breathe heavy and labored all the time. We brought him to the vet and they detected a murmur. After an x-ray showed us fluid in Rocky's lungs, the doctor put him on a diuretic (Lasix). Two weeks later, we were in Hawaii and a friend of ours brings Rocky to their local vet (they live in a different town) who says Rocky can come off the Lasix and gave him an all-natural heart strengthening medication. After we get back from Hawaii, Rocky is looking well, but still not 100%. He is still very lethargic and sleeps most of the time. We bring him home, where we've been back for 3 weeks and his condition has very slowly deteriorated.

Up until a week ago, Rocky could still chase his toy around and run and play with what little energy he could muster. Three days ago, he started to become more lethargic and breathe heavily. We brought him to the vet and they did more blood tests showing that his kidneys were deteriorating. They don't know what else to do and referred us to a veterinary cardiologist. Now we are waiting, hoping Rocky will have something that is not severe, of course, we are planning for the worst as well. If Rocky needs surgery, we will consider it, he is really like my little boy, and if there is anything that can be done to give me more time with him, I'd absolutely do it!

Rocky ran away in NYC last year (March 2006) and we were so fortunate to find him again, if it turns out now is his time, I'm glad at least I will be with him. When he was gone (~36 hours), the worst was thinking that he'd died alone and cold somewhere. I'm so grateful every day that we got him back in a city of 12 million people, a bichon with no ID tag was returned to his owner. If it's really his time now, at least he will be surrounded by many friends and family who love him to death. Thanks to all Rocky's friends and I hope you are all healthy and happy!

April Fools!

WOOHOO, it's finally April and it is beautiful outside! Now I get to go for walks on dry ground!! Now that spring is here I'm getting walked at least twice a day, which is great because I was about to go nuts being trapped in the house. The park by my house was going to be closed due to "budget cuts" or something stupid, but my parents broke in and walked me there anyway, it's my FAVORITE park! It's not fair to close the park, so many of my other friends hang out there too! It's a shame, I love the park because there is always lots of dogs and children having fun in it. Mommy's writing an angry letter to our "county legislators" who apparently can't manage the county's money and is taking money away from our local zoos, parks, libraries (not that I can read, but mommy and daddy can), and other arts/humanities stuff in our county to pay for the "deficit" :o(

Anyway, I have some new pics from the past month. Mostly I'm sleeping in them, but I will try to find some of me awake. My hair is growing out finally so I don't look so awkwardly naked :o) All the girls say that my hair is at a really cute length right now, little do they know, I only get cuter and cuter! Well, I'm off with my parents to a huge garage sale now. Maybe I'll find some toys I like!
