Arrival Story:
I adopted Heidi privately from a family breakup situation. The woman was sorry to see her go, but was smart enough to realize that she wouldn't be home enough (a new active single social life) to spend enough time with Heidi, who at that time was left in her crate all day. I had gone out to see her just thinking that it would be a preliminary interview, but came home with Heidi, and that was the start of a wonderful relationship. Heidi is my best friend and I treasure every moment that we share together!

Bio:
June 3, 2009 - Sadly my sweet little girl left this world today to go over the Bridge taking my love and my heart with her. She fought a long hard battle with IMHA and was a little trooper to the end. Pete and I will miss her deeply and forever.

We're playing a new game - we're supposed to list 5 naughty things that we do. Well, of course it took me a really looonnnnnggggg time to try to come up with 5 bad things because I'm an angel all the time, but here are my minor misdemeanours:

1. I like to eat kleenex, and other icky stuff out of the garbage cans. Mom had to put all the garbage cans in the house out of reach, and she has to warn anyone coming to visit not to put purses on the ground for me to graze in.
2. I make this funny, yowly howl when I want something from mom's plate when she's eating dinner. Mom says that I must be part Austrian because I'm a really good yodeller - whatever that is??
3. I eat dirt... yup, believe it - dirt! This disease that I have (IMHA) has a side effect called Pica where I want to eat weird stuff. Mom had to move the big hibiscus plant behind the x-pen so that I stop eating the dirt from it.
4. Sometimes I poop in the house - but that's only lately because I haven't been feeling very well. Plus, it's been cold, cold, cold here too.
5. Wow, hard to believe I'm able to come up with 5 - well, 4 anyways!! Maybe my 5th one is that I can't count very well.

Love
Heidi....

A new year!!!

Hard to believe that 2008 will soon be behind us. It's not been a great year for me. At the end of October I wasn't feeling very good and was taken to the "Room of Doom". The vet thought that my back was sore again (I had an operation on it in November 2005 to fix a herniated disk). Mom put me on rest in a crate and Prednisone for two weeks.
However I wasn't feeling very good at all and eventually I didn't even want to eat - which isn't like me at all!! Mom said something is very wrong and took me back again to the "Room of Doom". This time we saw another vet - a really nice one as far as vets go :) and he said that I had really bad anemia.
It ends up that I have a disease called IMHA - immune mediated hemolytic anemia. When my mom thought my back hurt, it was just that I was so tired from the anemia that I didn't want to move much at all.
I spent two days in the ICU (whatever that is!) and got a transfusion and they put me on all kinds of weird drugs. Every week or so they poke me to take some blood and check on my red blood cells. So far, they're about the same and mommy really wants them to get lots more.
They also gave me a bigger poke one day and did something called a bone marrow biopsy. It ends up that I am trying really hard to make new red blood cells but my stupid immune system keeps attacking them even in my bone marrow thinking that they are bad guys!
I'm now on yet another yucky drug but mom is still hoping that it will help me get more red cells. I'm still very tired but at least I am eating again and I don't hurt anywhere.
I know that my mom is really hoping that I will get better soon -maybe 2009 will be a good year for us!!

Well, we've been a bit lazy and haven't added much to the diary lately. It's been a really cold winter here, and luckily mom hasn't made me walk too much in the snow - I hate cold, snow & slush!
I'm still going to visit the physical therapist sometimes for my shoulder - they have a really neat cat there. I usually hate cats, but Olivia is fun and likes to play with me - except the last time the therapist had put the needles in me Olivia pulled one out of me and tried to eat it! Mom was quick though and took it from her!
I just love to curl up under the blankets by the window and watch the birds in my yard. Sometimes the sun shines in and I can lie in it - that's like a trip south for dogs!
