Katie's April Fools Experience

Katie woke up sick on March 31st! Vomiting and would not eat. The next day she wasn't any better so I took her off to the vet. Luckily we got in fast! After putting her on IV antibiotics and fluids, they did bloodwork on her and her liver enzymes were OFF the chart! Her regular vet, Dr Anne wasn't in that day but saw her the next day. Dr Anne suggested that Katie go to Purdue Veterinary School Hospital for further tests. There is some CAH in her bloodline, and there was the possibility that she might have a Venal Caval Shunt. She needed an ultrasound to find out. She didn't really fit the symptoms or age profile for either one of these dread diseases, but I wanted to get to the bottom of this! The other possibility was that she'd eaten something "God Awful" that had been dropped by a possum or raccoon, causing a bacterial reaction. As if having my Best Girl seriously ill wasn't enough, my Dad passed away in Florida the SAME DAY! Stress?? Me?? No way! Katie came home on Saturday. I spent the weekend making funeral arrangements for my Dad, then called Purdue on Monday. Got an appointment for her that Wednesday. Friday of that week I had to fly to Florida to get clothes for my Dad, pick-up my Mom's ashes (to be buried with him) and clean the food out of the house. Purdue did the ultrasound and a contrast xray on Katie. Her liver appeared normal size and shape! YAY! That ruled out CAH and PCS! But now they wanted to do a biopsy to see what they could find out about this horrible episode. The biopsy was done the day I flew to Florida. The wonderful people at Purdue called me at least twice a day to let me know how Katie was. The surgeon even called me to let me know exactly what she would do during the biopsy and offered to tack Katie's stomach against torsion/bloat whilst she was in there! Brilliant idea! They also were very understanding about my bizarre situation and allowed Katie to stay there until I got done with the wake and funeral, on Monday and Tuesday. That was a real load off my mind as I didn't want to bring her home and dump her off while I was gone all day long! In the meantime, Katie was eating Science Diet K/D and doing well. I picked her up on Wednesday ( April 13). She actually bounced right back from death's door with just the antibiotics. It took what seemed like forever to get the test results back. The most serious thing they tested for was Copper Storage Disease. Finally, 3 weeks later, all the tests came back...........nothing abnormal. One enzyme was still a bit up, but not enough to be a problem or a symptom. Dr Anne and I decided that the root cause must have been the "Eaten Something God Awful" thing. Purdue suggested that she have bloodwork done every six months and if it went whacky again, do another biopsy. It was very difficult to make Sirius understand that Katie couldn't play with him like a maniac for the first couple of weeks home! LOL But now she's back to her Alpha Bitch "I'm The Princess" status. I couldn't be happier. Now we patrol the yard nearly every day looking for "icky" stuff. Katie's back on her regular food, gained back the weight she lost and looking really good. Now if we can just get some grass back in the yard we'll ALL be totally HAPPY! Here's hoping everyone has a happy summer!

Yeppers! It's true! SantaDobe brought Katie a Brother for Christmas!! She couldn't be more delighted! Frankie (ewww what a name for a dobie boy!) whose name is being changed to Sirius Black ( from Harry Potter) is a real delight. He arrived here on Dec 27th, 2004. He was given up by his previous owner due to health reasons. The boy is black and tan and gonna be HUGE! He's 7 mos old and already as tall as Katie (19 mos old)!! His feet are as big as the palm of my hand!! His ears were cropped but never properly posted. So he's in posts for at least a month to se if we can ammend the problem. They stand facing forward, like a German Shepherd, and when he gets excited they form a pyramid over the top of his head! LOL He wasn't housebroken when he got here, and was very timid about using the dog door. He got the hang of the dog door in a couple days......and recently has stopped having "accidents" in the house. In fact t'day (Jan 07) he actually went outside on his own. Without me or Katie to prompt him!! YAY He settling in really well and Katie is ecstatic to have someone to play with ALL the time. They are complete opposites in personality. Katie has a very high prey drive, Frankie/Sirius' first look at the cats was less than exciting. He sniffed, checked it out, went looking for a toy. Katie usually only barks at critters, rarely at people ( since most of them are here to pet and admire her don't ya know), Frankie/Sirius barks at the slightest noise! A real watch dog! He doesn't have much in the way of manners, but we're working on it. He's still just a baby so he's got plenty of time. Right from the start they were sharing a bed, playing together, and stealing toys and bones from each other. I've caught Katie holding a hoofie and Frankie/Sirius chewing on it! LOL LOL What a kind big sister!!

PS If anyone out there has any tips for correction posting on ears please contact me!! I'm certainly not good at it as you can see from the pic! LOL

Well, I wasn't able to write a diary before...I think this is gonna be FUN! And being a true Doberbrat I LOVE FUN! Just to fill you in on me, I'm a Cambria Kennels Doberman, my daddy is Cambria's Irish Rebellion (aka Patrick). Mom got me from the kennel July 2003 and named me after Katherine Hepburn. We're both Redheads! LOL She just loves Dobers and had 2 boys that went to the Rainbow Bridgebefore I got here. I'm the first girlie Dober for Mom. She had a real time learning to tape my ears at first, but she got the hang of it and you can see from my pictures that they turned out beautifus! I have 4 kitties in my house. One of them likes to argue with me, one of them hates the sight of me, and the other two try to put up with me most of the time. I like to put my paws on them cuz then they make fun noises! I went to obedience school and passed ! Part of the test at the end was to learn a new trick. Mom taught me to "bow" for "How Do You Do?" I like to do that. I liked my classes and made a friend named Snickers. He was a miniature of ME! We played sometimes after class. I'd like to do more classes but Mom has a hard time finding a class when she's not at work! I have a new friend now named Jack. He lives with Mom's friend Mandy. Jack is part collie/part shepard boy. We run and run and run in my yard. Jack gets to come for "doggie day care" when Mom and Mandy work. Poor Jack has a short fence at home and he likes to climb over it! teeheeteehee And he doesn't even have a doggie door! He likes to come here and stay with me! We run in the yard and play with my toys and bones. Now Mom is telling me that I might be getting a BROTHER.....what's a brother?? I'm not sure I want one if you can't eat or chew on it........
