Arrival Story:
My friend, Chicky, gave Tootsie as a birthday gift. =)

Tootsie came to us in March 1996 as a birthday gift from my good high school friend, Chicky. Back then, we still lived in Manila. Tootsie came with us when we transferred to Taytay, Rizal in 1997. I still remember our ride in the service truck that hauled all our stuff. She loved the wind in her hair and how the people we passed would say what a pretty dog she was. Upon our arrival at our new home, she had many suitors -neighborhood askals waiting to get a glimpse of this pretty white lady - and had many children as well. Her death last May 2005 came as a shock to our family, especially to me. I did not expect her gone so soon. We still miss our Tootsie and talk about her almost everyday - her mannerisms and antics. Even the dogs in the house sense something is amiss and eversince her death, the other dogs have been somewhat subdued; probably still mourning her loss along with us.

Still Missing Tootsie

It's been more than a year and I'm still mourning the loss of my furry friend. When I first moved to Sydney, it was a slow and steady struggle to adjust. I would cry almost every day and then I'd remember the times I cried back home and Tootsie would jump on the bed and nudge me as if to ask "What's wrong? Why are you crying?" She'd paw at my arm or push me out of bed.

When I see dogs here that look like her, I get excited and smile. I know she's somewhere in Doggie Heaven looking down on me, making sure I'm safe.

Missing Tootsie

Took me quite a while to muster enough courage to log on to Dogster. My Tootsie passed away last May 23, 2005 at 11:45PM.

She was at the vet two days before to have her uterus removed (it had been full of puss, we were told). But since she was old, the doctor was worried she would not survive the surgery. I was confident she would pull through. We still had a lot of memories to make, my Tootsie and I.

Mama already felt that Tootsie might not make it. Earlier that sad night, Ma and I visited Tootsie at the vet. I wish I had stayed longer! If I had only known that would be the last time I would see her. Later that night, it started to rain. It also started to thunder. I called the vet to tell her to keep Tootsie company as she was terrified of thunder. If only I had been obstinate enough to brave the rains and be with her!

On the morning of May 24, the vet's assistant brought her back to the house - in a box. We buried her under the mango tree in front of the house. My grandmother had hollow blocks placed on top of where she lay so that no human or animal would dare touch her grave.

Every morning on my way to work, as I pass by that mango tree, I would say, "Bye, Pooch," just as I had when she was still alive.

Walking for a Cause

On March 20, 2005, my (human) Mommy will take me to CCP Complex to join the first ever dog parade. I'm not too sure about the details but from what I heard, it's a walk for the cause of mongrels here in the Philippines. As we all know, my country is somewhat notorious as a dog-eating culture. What the walk aims to achieve is to show the world that not all Filipinos are like that.

I heard that Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and other big animal rights groups are spearheading this event.

I'm really excited. Mommy said we'd take the car to CCP so I don't have to commute. Wow! I haven't been to Manila since 1996 when mommy brought me home. I lived in Manila for about a year (with them) and then we moved to Taytay, Rizal.

I'm really, really excited! Weeeh! =)

P.S. I hope Mommy tells all my dog pals to come to the parade too.
