I was not yet a year old, when I gave birth to six beautiful puppy girls. I guess that made someone angry, 'cause they took my newborn puppies and me and tossed us in a field to fend for ourselves or die. We must have lived in the field for a little while, as I was totally emaciated when the Humane Society of Fresno found us. I was a good momma, they said I came right to them and showed them where my girls were. We spent a few days in the pound and were ready to be euthanaized, when a nice lady named, Tanya, found us and transported us to Southern California to her rescue T.A.N.Y.A, Inc. She was a vet tech and knew how to care for a mama and pups. She kept me on intravenous feeding for 6 weeks until I could wean my pups. My girls were cute, fat, fluffy and healthy and were quickly adopted when they turned 8 weeks. Tanya put my photo on Petfinder and hoped for the best. It wasn't the most flattering picture; I was very skinny with full mammary glands. I was worried that no one would ever love me.
Late one night this lady, who I didn't even know, was "just looking" on Petfinder. She saw my winsome face and ignored the rest. She woke up this man, who I didn't even know, and said, "look at this dog"! The man said, “we will go look at her this weekend”. So the lady called Tanya, and said, "we want to meet Star" (that was my rescue name). They drove 100 miles out into the desert over dirt roads to places they didn't even know existed. Tanya got me out of my crate, where I was still recovering from my life in the field ,and raising pups. I was still very skinny and still had those big mama glands, but the man and the lady fell in love with me at first sight. They paid the fee, right then and there, so no one else could take me. I had to stay one more week and get "fixed", I guess I was sorta broken. The next weekend they drove the 100 miles again to bring me home. I slept in Mom's lap all the way home.
The first few weeks were hard, I had worms, Guardia, kennel cough, bronchitis that turned into pneumonia. With love, a healthy diet and a very good vet, I overcame all these problems. I still have a sensitive tummy, I eat only Rx food and have to refuse most treats or bad things happen in my intestinal track. (Actually I would eat anything, but Mom is the guardian of my tummy, and she refuses most treats on my behalf. Grrrrr. I was 14 pounds when they picked me up. I am now a healthy 28 lbs.
I live the life of an only princess with a king and queen who love me more than they can say. I sleep burrowed under the covers between them. Mom walks me everyday or takes me to the dog park. Daddy plays with me every night, and kisses me in the morning. He also loves to teach me tricks. I will do anything for him. I am the happiest dog in the world.
I get to play with my two beagle cousins (who were rescued from a medical laboratory) a couple of times a week. I really love my two widdle grandminipeeps and they love me. Life is good, except for the treat thang. I wish every pup that had a rough start in life could have my happy ever after.
I want everyone who reads this to know, that no matter how terrible a dog may look on Petfinder, or in a shelter, it is possible that dog is the most wonderful dog in the world, once they are healthy and have a happy home. Give us rescues a chance to be your happy dog, please!
