A Tale of Two Ears - A Shepherd's Story

I'm a big sister!

After 3 and a half years of being an only child my Mommy did the unthinkable... she had a puppy! OK.. SHE didn't have it.. she went and got it and brought it home. In MY car. To MY house. To sleep in MY bed. TO PLAY WITH MY TOYS!
Mom said Molly (that's the puppy's name) needed a home and that she needs a big sister to teach her how to be a good girl, but I dunno. Seems like she was doing just fine where she was. I mean.. she had food and a yard. But her people couldn't keep her in the house with them because she was too playful and kept knocking over their hairless puppy.
So anyway.. she's been here two weeks now and I guess I'm starting to get used to it. She has her own food bowl so she's not eating out of mine and she mostly plays with the toys I never use... although sometimes she tries to take my balls and I have to get them back. But she's actually kind of fun to play with sometimes, until she starts being rude and barking at me. Then I have to put her in her place. ;-P

I suppose I'll let her stay.. as long as she remembers that I am the boss. OK.. Mommy and Daddy are the bosses, but I'm next!

We Love Comfortis! It makes my butt fuzzy!

My parents and I always dreaded the warm days of summer. It seemed every year, I would lose my hair because of a horrible flea allergy and the fact that the bugs were so hard to control.
Mommy and Daddy felt horrible seeing me suffer despite many different flea treatments and I felt.. well, itchy! Not to mention the embarrasment of having no hair on my rear end!
This year looks to be better though. Mid February we got some warm weather and as usual, I started getting a bald spot near my tail. Mommy was talking to the vet and asked if there was something more powerful she could use that wouldn't harm me. We'd tried Frontline, Nature's Guardian, Sevin dust, flea collars and another topical remedy sold by PetSmart (mom can' t remember the name).
The vet gave her a big brown crunchy tablet she called a "Comfortis". I chewed it up when we got home (tasted OK but not the best treat ever).
Within a few weeks my bald spot was filling back in, instead of getting bigger! I wasn't itching either! It's now May and we've had ALOT of very hot days already. Mommy calls me "fuzzy butt" cause I have more hair now than she's ever seen on me at one time. My tail is thicker, my hind legs are covered in lush golden fur... I'm lookin' GOOOOOD!
Mommy says this stuff is even cheaper per dose than Frontline and she loves it because it doesn't wash off, she can still pet me right after she gives it to me and it's not a nasty chemical that my cat brother will get on him and make him sick like some of the flea stuff. Even if it was more expensive, she'd still use it. After that first month's dose, she went back to the vet and bought 6 more!

Wow.. it's hard to believe it's been a whole year since my last birthday. I'm two years old now, so why does everybody keep calling me a puppy? Anytime we see people in public they ask if I'm a puppy still. No, I'm just a petite young lady with a very active and athletic lifestyle. I love playing with tennis balls and swimming!

Yeah, swimming is awesome! I learned how at the PetSafe dog park. Mommy and Daddy kept throwing tennis balls in the water and I just couldn't leave them there to drown! The first ones they threw were easy to get, then they started throwing them farther and farther until once.. I couldn't reach it. The water was up to my neck and I tried, but I just couldn't get it to come to me. Then something happened.. and my foot slipped. My head went underwater, then popped right back up as I started kicking my feet. I saw my shot, grabbed the ball, turned and kept kicking. Before I knew it, I was back on shore and Mommy and Daddy were jumping up and down saying stuff like "GOOD JOB SASHA!", "That's a BIG GIRL!" and "I KNEW you could do it!" Apparently what I did was called swimming... and you know what. The next time I tried it, it was actually fun! I kept begging them to keep throwing the ball into the water so I could swim and get it.

I got to celebrate my birthday on the Saturday after it cause Mommy and Daddy both had to work that day. Saturday, Mom and Dad took me to the lake and I swam and swam. It was great. I fell asleep on the way home a tired, soggy and happy puppy with my head on Mommy's lap.

What's Howloween?

Apparently this thing called Howl-o-ween is a night when people you know turn into creatures you don't know. Last night three beings showed up at my house that smelled alot like Ashleigh, Cody and Haley... but they didn't look them at all!! There was a big black cat standing on two feet in my living room! And Mommy kept petting me saying "It's OK Sasha.. that's Ashleigh. You remember Ashleigh." Then... get this... the cat takes it's EARS OFF!! It did kinda look like Ashleigh and smelled a little like her. Although there were lots of other more overpowering smells.. sweet smells I don't recognize. But no amount of convincing was going to prove to me that thing was Ashleigh.. she doesn't have a tail!! And Cody.. he looked almost dead or something... His face was way too pale and his eyes were all blackened. He also had those sweet smells, as did Haley. She looked familiar once she took off her crown, but that red flowing robe was spooky on it's own. It looked like it could have swallowed me.

Oh.. I got another new collar now. And an ID tag with my name and phone number on it. I'm all ready to cheer on the Tennessee Vols with my new duds! You gotta check it out.. Mommy's putting a picture up as soon as I finish writing this.

Back to the Vet

Went back to the vet yesterday for my 3rd puppy shot. (I was hoping it would be my last, but the vet wants me to have another since I'm going to be such a big girl when I grow up.) Actually, the shot didn't bother me at all. The nice vet lady (her face tasted good) was petting me and talking to me and I barely felt it. I think Mommy keeps expecting me to cry or something, but after playing with THE CAT I hardly feel those tiny little needles! I really could have done without that Bordatella thing though.. have you seen what they do to you!?!! They stuck it up my nose! Silly vet lady, doesn't she realize I don't like when people hold my head like that!? Oh well, I got two Alpo Snaps, TONS of petting and "good girls", got to meet some more doggies and lots of people commenting me on how pretty and well behaved I am. =)

And I didn't even get sick in the car!! Woohoo!! Mommy had the big beach towel on the seat like always. But this time she was REALLY prepared and covered the console of the car with the towel too, since I always seem to get sick and puke there.

We called Daddy when we got home and Mommy told him how good I was at the vets. Then I got a frozen carrot!! Those things are awesome. They're pretty good regular, but Mommy stuck some in the freezer and they are so fun to chase around the floor. I found out quickly if you pounce on them just right, they go spinning wildly on the hardwood floor and I can chase them... until it runs and hides under the loveseat. But that's OK.. cause Mommy got down on the floor and got it for me. I supervised, of course, and gave her a good licking when she found it.

Congratulations to Cousin Ashleigh

I just wanted to let my human cousin Ashleigh know how proud I am of her. I've only known you for a little while, but that day at your Mommy's house when you let me lay my head on your leg and kept petting me... I fell in love.

Mommy told me they went to a competition of yours for gymnastics (thanks Mommy for helping me spell those words). I guess it's something like an agility contest for humans. Anyway, she said there were alot of other girls there competing against you and you beat them all! Way to go girl!

I'm not sure what Vault, Beam and Bars are... but Mommy said you placed first in all those... AND won the All-Around!! That means you were the best one there in your class and age group. AWESOME!! GOOOOOOD GIIRRRRLLLL!! And you got a red ribbon for Floor... don't worry I mess up on the floor every now and then too. But I'm learning to go to the door so Mommy can take me out. Oh, hehe.. Mommy said that's not the kind of floor training she was talking about. Oops. Oh well.. as I was saying.. CONGRATULATIONS!!! You're #1!!

Weekend with Daddy!

YAY!! Daddy came home this weekend!! I haven't seen him in three weeks! :(

See, Daddy is a truck driver and he spends alot of time on the road. So it's just me, Mommy and that goofy cat (Ralphie) at home. Mommy says Daddy won't be gone as long this time, probably 12 days. I'm just a baby and I don't count all that well yet.. but I know 12 is alot when it comes to being away from Daddy.

But we get to do alot of fun stuff together when he's home, so that's cool. And the next time he'll be home, I'll be done with my puppy shots (hopefully) and that means I can go even more places with Mommy and Daddy. I can't wait!! I wanna do everything.

I think Daddy was a little scared that I wouldn't remember him when he came home. I was a little confused at first because it seemed like Daddy had more hair when he left.. not alot but a little more. (Note from Mommy: Daddy shaves his head) And he wasn't wearing the same clothes. I remembered the voice cause Mommy let's me listen in on phone calls with Daddy sometimes.. and sometimes he'd even talk to me! He even tries speaking Dog.. but I don't think he realizes what he's saying. Hehe One time he told me he had a purple duck sitting on his head! But as soon as I smelled him.. OH YEAH!! THAT"S DADDY! And from that point on, I was all over him.

It's tough sometimes when Mommy and Daddy go into different rooms in the house. I'm so used to following and watching Mommy. But I want to make sure Daddy is safe too.. but I remember Daddy telling me before he left for work the very first time that my job was to watch over Mommy and keep her safe. So I figure I need to stay with her. If she leaves the room, I go with her. If Daddy leaves the room sometimes I follow him cause I know Mommy is safe where she's at.

I got worried Sunday when Daddy went outside and started a fire!! Mommy and I were headed out the door when I saw Daddy surrounded by SMOKE! Mommy kept saying it was OK.. and to be honest it smelled delicious... but it was smoke and fire and Daddy was in the middle of it! Finally I realized it was coming out of the black metal thing that usually sits outside the house. And when Mommy gave me a piece of raw steak and some raw chicken.... it all made sense. Mommy and Daddy don't like their food raw like I do. So they were making a fire to cook it. Mommy usually just puts the food in metal things she calls "Pots and Pans" or in a beeping box. But they seemed really like the fire-cooked food Daddy made.

Daddy went back to work on Sunday night. He told Mommy he'd see her soon.
***I CAN"T WAIT!!!*** But don't worry Daddy, I know you have to work so Mommy can buy me food and toys and treats and maybe even some more of that steak stuff!! ;) I'll be waiting and you better bet I'll have lots of puppy kisses saved up for you when you get back home!!

Busy Week!

Wow, this has been a busy week.

09-17-06 - I finally got out of that kennel. Let me tell you, living with 10 siblings can be annoying. There was originally 12 of us, but something happened to one of my sisters. The worst part was, there were more boys than girls... those boys can be so annoying sometimes. So once my new humans filled out the papers for me to adopt them and get my proof of ownership for them, we headed off to meet my new family.

First stop was Grama's house. And Papa was there too (I understand I won't see him as often - he's a truck driver like my new Daddy). Then came three human puppies... Ashleigh, Cody and Haley. They all said I was cute... I was pretty scared at that point. I was used to being around alot of other puppies, but never this many people.

Second stop was just down the hill at Aunt Helen's house. She has a furry little black and white thing called a "Dale". I learned later that Dale does not like anyone near his hind parts.. Geez! How's a dog supposed to get to know another dog when you get snapped/growled at for saying Hi? Oh well. I got to know Ashleigh pretty well, she would let me lay on the floor with my head on her leg and pet me. I've never been able to just lay down and relax like this... WAIT! What is THAT! That has got to be the weirdest looking dog I have ever seen. And it's coming right towards me. "Cat"? Mommy says that's a Cat. OK.. Great Mr. Cat. You've seen me now get away. Help. Somebody. Why is this thing laying next to me? Oh good.. We're leaving now. Hey.. Daddy. Umm.. Why are you carrying the Cat thing? Oh great. It's coming home with us.

I'll tell you more about home later.. I'm tired now. It's been such a long say.
