Arrival Story: Kennedy came to me through English Springer Rescue of America, Inc. After several months of waiting for the perfect dog to come to me through ESRA, I was told about Lucy, a pregnant Springer rescued by ESRA and about to be the proud mother of a number of mix puppies. I was a little hesitant about adopting a puppy that was so young, but when I saw the pictures of Kennedy and her brothers and sisters, I couldn't resist. My roommate and I ventured out to the Parker's residence where we were mauled by 9 of the cutest puppies I have ever seen. Wanting to take them all home with me was an easy option, but picking out one was difficult. After playing with the puppies for a little while, I fell in love with Sasha (later named Kennedy) and claimed her as my own. The day I brought her home was incredibly exciting, my roommates were thrilled to have a hand in raising Kennedy and my friends even came over for the Welcoming Party... I knew right then that Kennedy would have more than enough love in her new forever home.

Bio: Kennedy is by far the sweetest dog I have ever met. She's a real lover and wants everyone to notice her. She's always making friends with the neighbors. I call her our shadow because she follows us everywhere I go, which I obviously don't mind. She's a very happy-go-lucky, laid back dog who loves to get out and run around but also loves to cuddle up on the bed with us. She LOVES playing with other dogs and sometimes gets to go to the Piedmont Park Dog Park where she'll run around with the other dogs until she finds a nice big stick to chew on in the shade. She's really just an amazing dog and I'm lucky to have her!

It has been awhile since we updated Miss Kennedy's diary, but back during the winter, Kennedy had to have knee surgery. We first noticed her limping after an exciting day at the Piedmont Dark Park. She was running around with some larger dogs and took a spill, but recovered quickly, but we noticed that after that day, she was having a hard time going up and down steps and was more reluctant to jump up on the bed with us. Unfortunately she had hurt her knee pretty bad (which might have been an existing condition common in some dogs and the tumble really sent it over the edge... literally) and we learned that she had a luxated patella, or a floating knee cap, and needed surgery to repair the issue. So we turned to the veternary office that Eileen (Lucy's mama) works for, for help and to know that she was having surgery in the hands of someone that Eileen trusted. After surgery, Kennedy was a site in our neighborhood... hobbling around on 3 legs with her 4th one dangling below her, completely shaved. We think it was difficult for her because she's such an active dog and we really had to limit her movement and walks which I'm sure was worse for her than it was for us. But she's resilient and bounced right back! She now has no problems with her knee, she's as active as ever and we have Eileen and everyone at the vet clinic for taking care of our baby. I know Eileen got to spend some time with her while she was there and we really appreciated the fact that Kennedy had someone she knows there with her so she wasn't alone.

Until recently, we believed that Kennedy, even though she is half English Springer Spaniel and half Newfoundland, HATED water. She never liked swimming, she hates getting a bath... she just didn't like getting wet in general.
Then, my boyfriend Chris and I decided to take a trip to Jekyll Island, GA for a nice long weekend at the beach and we stayed at a pet friendly hotel on the beach so we could bring Kennedy. She was a little iffy at first and initially chased the waves back into the ocean and ran from them as they crept up the beach...
She hates not being with us, so when Chris and I waded into the water, Kennedy stared at us from the beach and then made the plunge! She waded out right behind us! We were shocked because she absolutely loved it. She would wade out as far as she could touch, swim a bit and then turn around and head back for the shore... over and over again. She dug in the sand, relaxed on the beach and swam with us when we swam! It was great! Being from Florida, I'm glad she's my little beach lovin' dog! Check out the pictures!

It's been a very exciting first year for Kennedy! She's such a smart, beautiful, loveable dog and I couldn't be happier with her!
She's turning a year old on Saturday, December 4 and is SO excited to play with her brothers and sisters!
Hope to see everyone on Saturday!
