Arrival Story: It was 5:30- almost the end to a long day of work. A woman and her young son came rushing in carrying a min pin wrapped in a towel. The woman was hysterical- and the little boy was whimpering and rocking back and forth. The story was that they had adopted the dog the day before from a friend, and were bringing him to the store to get him a new leash and collar. He was riding in the boy's lap in the back seat, when the little boy decided to roll down the window. The nervous little dog instantly decided to escape and jumped out the window of the SUV which was traveling ~50mph down a busy highway.
They stopped and the woman had her little son run out and grab the dog. They rushed him straight to our clinic.
The dog's left medial thigh was slashed open from hip to knee, and his femur was snapped in two and protruding out of the grossly open wound. Debris and dirt caked the wound. Through all of this, the puppy was sitting worried and scared, but letting us take rads and doing everything we needed. Thankfully, the only injury was the major one we had witnessed. No internal bleeding or hidden fractures. The woman decided that she could not spend the money for surgery, since "he isn't really my dog, I only got him yesterday. If it was (so and so) I would do anything, but we can always get another min pin." Enraged and hurt, I begged the doctor I work with to get him turned over to the hospital, so we could at least amputate his leg and save his life. He agreed and we scheduled surgery for the next day.

Bio: Baragon is now happy and healthy running around on all four (yes four) of his little legs! The Doctor I work for always believes in giving everyone a chance, and so borrowed the equipment required from a friend and performed the surgery needed to stabilize his leg. 2 months and at least 20 bandage changes later, his infection had subsided and the wound had healed. We then removed the IM pin holding his leg together and placed an external fixator, which we left in place until about a week ago when that too was finally removed. He is now running free and happy with his four beautiful legs. He no longer feels the need to throw himself into oncomming traffic, and has a family that loves him.
