Arrival Story: I worked in a pet store in WV, before I knew that ALL PUPPIES THAT ARE SOLD IN PET STORES COME FROM PUPPY MILLS!!!! PLEASE DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM ANY PET STORE!!!! Even if the puppy survives the horrible conditions of the Puppy Mill, the majority of them do not make the long trip on the truck with no air conditioning, food, or water. Even though Rutger survived the trip, he was very sick, and according to the managers, not worth selling for $1000.oo. They decided to put him to sleep, and send him back (like they do with so many puppies), so they could get a replacement puppy, and not lose any money by selling him at a reduced price. My husband and I were outraged, and told them that we would cause so much commotion, and tell everyone about the poor conditions, and the puppy deaths that I had witnessed, if they didn't let us get Rutger. They finally agreed, after a lot of fighting for him, to sell him to us at a reduced price. (If they wouldn't have, I would have taken him after hours, and left some money on the table! There was no way that I was going to let that little, one pound ball of love, that fit in the palm of my hand, die for no reason) And yes, in a way, I contributed to a Puppy Mill by purchasing Rutger, but it was such a small amount that we paid, that I don't think the Puppy Mill would have seen much, if any, of the money. And seeing him in the back room, in a cage, laying on a urine soaked rag, with kittens in the cage above him, kicking kitty litter on his head, waiting for the next truck to come to the store, so he could be killed right before the driver got there, was just too difficult. I'm sorry, I just couldn't leave him, and still been able to sleep at night. Long story, short, he has had to have a couple of surgeries, and has had a few health problems, but nothing major. He is now 9 years old, and the love of our lives! I can't imagine anyone killing him, especially because of money. I quit that job immediately after rescuing Rutger, and hopefully Rutger's story will help in some way to put an end to Puppy Mills.

Bio: Rutger says to please purchase your pet supplies from stores that do not sell puppies! If we all stop going to these Pet Stores, then eventually they will go out of business, and so will the Puppy Mills. Some stores work with their local humane societies by having animals in their stores that are up for adoption, and these are the places we need to support. Adoption is best, but if you want a "Registered Dog", find a local breeder who can show you, or give you an address, where you can SEE BOTH parents of the puppy. "Registered papers" in pet stores are FAKE! They are useless pieces of paper, with no value whatsoever! Don't be fooled by paying hundreds, or thousands of dollars for what is probably an inbred puppy with lots of health problems!
